I am a novice reveling in my new 20D. Learning the ropes on everything...including maintenance as you will see. Got a UV filter yesterday which was quite dusty. As I do not have a "blower" yet, I blew on the filter with puffs of air from my mouth which was probably a stupid, impulsive thing to do. Some saliva got on the filter. I attempted to wipe it away with a lens cloth to no avail. The saliva ended up streaking the filter. Any suggestions? I have heard so many conflicting theories on what to do...."lens" solution/no solution...windex/nowindex. I am just concerned about damaging the coating to the lens filter. Can I use water and wipe away with a lens cloth??? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Please....put the myths to bed if you can. Sometimes I read way too much for my own good! Thanks!!!!

here's my earlier reply to a similar question. i'm getting quite good at blowing air onto filters with my mouth without spitting on them, but a blower is probably recommended.

i find hoya HMC more difficult to clean than b+w's MRC. the hoya glass appears to be "dryer" and does not feel as smooth when wiped by a microfiber cloth.

I use the same filters. To keep clean of dust I give the surface a regular blow using my Giotto rocket blower (a worthwile investment). To get rid of stubborn marks I do a bit of heavy breathing on the surface and then wipe clean with a lens pen. Always gets it lovely and clean :)
