Hey,

I took delivery of the very well reccomended 85mm F1.8 USM yesterday and whilst being extremely sharp and fast it is showing stupidly large amounts of CA! Is this normal from this lens or have i got a dodgy copy?

I suspected it last night when i was checking the focus by focusing on the box, the focus is fine though i got fringing on the black:

http://www.neo-fusion.co.uk/gallery/gallery/Camera_Stuff/Lens_Samples/85_1.8vs50_1.8/100crop_focusedon_85.jpg

thats a 100% crop, and it isnt THAT bad there, but then this i took to test it again today:

excuse the misfocusing i moved slightly between focusing and shutter. Also a 100% crop.

Is this what I should be expecting from a £300, very very raved about lens? It almost looks like i've photoshopped it in it is that bad! i have just coverted from raw and cropped, nothing else done to it.

Thanks

Tom

PS All shots are F1.8 on the 20D.

If you bought the lense new (I can't tell from your post) ... I'd exchange it. That is hands down some of the worst CA I've ever seen.

Yea ive bought it new, unfortunately the store doesn't have any replacements that can get to me this week, and I bought this lens for a job I have on friday :| i'm goin to have to live with the CA and photoshop the hell out of them, but hopefully the images wont be any that should develop CA.

Cheers for the reply,

Tom

What you are seeing is normal for the 85 f/1.8 when used wide open at that angle to the light.

if this kind of performance is normal i am extremely surprised there has not been more about it on forums?

Spartan, I really really doubt so. No shot I ever made with a 50mm f1 (that has a CA problem, simply because of large aperture and lack of UD lens elements) @ f/1 had even remotely close that much of CA. Seriously, what rg-tom shows is ridiculous.

I hear that the 85 1.8 has high amounts of CA. maybe you can send it in to be repaired.

Yes that looks like a misaligned lens, not normal (although some CA is normal wide open).

Never seen this with mine, yours looks more like a PS effect !

Change it.
