The door with the graffiti is a padded cell. Horrible horrible room.

Very sad picture. That's what makes it so darn good.

If I didn't know it was a mental hospital, I would have assumed it was an old school.

Thank you very much for the kind words, guys. I'm really happy how this turned out, one of those shots that looked pretty crappy in the camera. It's a 9-exposure HDR by the way

It looks like an album cover. You could have each band member behind a door with his head poking out and maybe one in the window or at the end of the hall.

Of course, that would be a bit comedic, which would contrast with the serious tone of the photograph.

Mental hospital, school. Same thing really.

So, is it still operating? :D

Holy ****, this place looks awesome. Reminds me of one my favorite asylums (I'm into Urban Exploring also).

cdifoto - Actually, yes, some of the parts are still active. Not the asylum, but quite a few of the wings are in full operation with staff coming and going. That's what makes getting pictures so hard, because you can't stay in one place too long and you have to be careful about being seen/standing in front of windows etc..

That's the truth. I'm a fourth grade teacher, and as the years have progressed from being a student to being a teacher, a lot has changed.

For example: when I was an elementary student, an entire wall of the classroom was glass with huge windows that opened. There were even windows up high, windows down low, and windows in the middle. We could breathe fresh air, hear kids in other grades on the playground, and enjoy the weather. We had a few recesses each day and sometimes the teacher took us out for a game of soccer as a reward.

Then, sometime later (about 10 years ago), I worked at a brand new school in which there were only two windows, each about three feet wide and about six feet tall. They didnt' open.

Finally, two years ago a new middle school opened in our county, and we took our fifth graders on a field trip to see it. As soon as we pulled up in the buss to the brand new building, the students literally gasped and said, "it doesn't have windows."

Sure enough: no windows throughout the entire school.

Wait. That's not exactly honest. The truth is worse: The offices, including the secretaries, nurse, principal and assistant principal had windows.

I kid you not. None of the classrooms have windows.

I tell all my students (fourth grade) the same line each year: "This year I am going to teach you all about the world in which we live.................from the confines of a concrete box."

I never force my political or religious opinions on students. Never. But I always tell them that learning is great, regardless of how hard schools sometimes seem to discourage it.

Sorry about that rant.

Wow, that is incredible.. You need to take pictures of this building, it sounds horrible.

You know, I just might do that. It's a nice enough building, and the gym and campus are beautiful. It's all very modern.

But there are no windows in any of the classrooms. Just brick walls. It's a Southern thing I guess.

They're just preparing the kids for their futures in warehousing.
