This may be a stupid question, but I can't help running it by you guys because I know you will give me the right answer--

When picking the Rebel up from the storefront the salesman said that I could use my XL2 lens on the Rebel. Yet another nearby salesman disagreed and said that I cannot.

Does anyone know the right answer? I'd try it myself but I won't be around me XL2 for another few weeks as I am traveling.

As always, your help is much appreciated, thanks all

I think it's the other way round. You can use the EF lens on your XL2 with an adapter. But I'm guessing here.

Best regards,

Concur. There's an adapter for the XL2 that allows it to take EF lenses. The sensor on the XL2 is so small relative to the EF and EF-S sensors that an XL2 lens wouldn't be able to cover one of those larger sensors and you'd just get a circular picture (AKA world's worst vignetting). Not to mention the XL2's sensor-mount distance is so short that the XL2 lens would have to be buried inside the mirror box of an EOS in order to allow it to focus at infinity.
