I can't remember if this was a crocodile, an alligator or a cayman. Can anyone ID it?

Well, I wasn't going to say anything, but since you brought it up...

Thanks for the comment. :D

I'm 99% certain that it is an Estuarine Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). It is at least a crocdile of some sort.

I agree it's a croc of some kind. Our gators are much darker. Nice specimen, and a good shot.

Thanks for the ID, Steve and Stan!

Nice pic. The rock looks like a gator itself, and the kid's tentative posture adds to the pic. Is the gator actually a bit greenish?

It's a purse in training, Tom!

I think it's a Croc. No wait a minute that didn't sound right , I think it's a great shot of a crocodile, there that's better.  The little girl looks totaly mesmerized at it. I don't think her eyes can open any wider. Nice shot.

Yes, that really was it's color. I liked the checkerboard pattern of it's scales, too.

I agree. She definitely "makes" the shot.

I'm going to get even farther behind on reading the posts here. The best connection I can get from the motel I'm staying in now is 28K dialup. The cabin I stayed in last night didn't even have a phone... Once I get home on Monday, I'll have to tear myself away from Photoshop for a day so I can really get caught up here... :D

Cool shot with great detail in the skin (which by the way would make a nice pair of boots). I'm surprised it wasn't eyeing up the little girl for lunch.

Nice shot! Were you shooting through the plexiglass surrounding the enclosure?

Nice. I am always amazed how these crocs can stay still at the same place for hours ;)

Doesn't look like a gator but has the croc look. Nice, Lonnie.

Were you shooting through the plexiglass surrounding the enclosure?

Yes, I was. There was plexiglass on three sides of his exhibit. I was on the opposite side as the girl, obviously.

Doesn't look like a gator but has the croc look.

I never have understood what the difference is. So, how does a gator's look differ from a croc?

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Alligators have a broader head with a rounded snout at the end, crocodile shave a more tapered snout. Additionally the lower jaw teeth in alligators fit into sockets in the upper jaw, so that they are not visible when the jaws are closed. The lower jaw teeth of crocodiles are visible in places along the mouth when it is closed, although soem fit into sockets (Note - this method is probably not going to do you much good if the teeth are buried in your leg, but by that stage you really probably don't care what it is anyway :-) :-) :-) )
