I just went to Joshua Tree last night, and was amazed on the view of the sky and how well you can see the stars, but I was not impressed how bad I got eaten while out there, and the longggggggggggggggggg drive. I am currently living in south orange county, and I was wondering where everyone goes to get the best view of the sky, without all of the light polution.

I always headed out to the desert... Joshua Tree was always a favorite, but I also really like an area just past Calico Ghost Town.
I also used to go up to the Kern River quite a bit, great stuff.
In the city limits, so to speak... try the local canyons... I lived in Silverado Canyon for a few years, it's nice up there.

I used to go shooting out there all the time, but its not much closer to me than Joshua Tree, I remember the bugs not being nearly as bad though... I guess ill just keep searching.
feel free to keep the suggestions comming though:cool:

I stay at a vineyard in Temecula from time to time to try and get some shots. You can see andromeda with the naked eye as well as the milky way, but its nowhere near as dark as big bear or joshua tree.
On the upside, its 1 hour from north orange county...probably a bit less for you.
Did you camp in Joshua Tree? Was there stuff to do during the day? I've been wanting to go, but I'm not wanting to drive back home at 5am.

thanks, ive got a friend that Lives in Temecula, maybe ill visit him and check out the stars at the same time. I tried going up Angeles Crest Highway already to the top of mt wilson, and couldnt really see the stars very well still, so I figured big bear might be the same... but ill check it out there too. As for Joshua Tree, I did not camp there, I left my house around 9pm, got inside the park around 11:30am, and drove another 30-40min down a dirt road to get really deep in there. Then after I had enough of the bugs, I left, and yah got home really really late.
