These are from this past Tuesday night at the VPCC in Trexlertown, PA. I'm always trying new stuff to find out what works best here. Tomorrow night I'm thinking about trying wireless off-camera flash. There will be a lot of people in the infield though, so I may hold off on that. Anyway, here are a few:

I like where you're going with dragging the shutter but try Second Curtain Sync so the blur is behind the rider instead of in front.

These look pretty good for being in low light.

I know, after the first few shots I reviewed in the LCD, I switched over to Second Curtain Sync, it had no effect- the blur remained in front. I can't explain it.

The blur you are seeing is the ambient lite subject bleeding through the flash lite subject. You are not going to eliminate the blur unless you can over power the ambient light by about two stops. Just setting your fash to SC will not achieve this. Typeing this on my BB so can't really comment on the photos but they look good on my phone :)

Not trying to hijack this thread, but I tried using second curtain in a twilight criterium tonight with my 40D and 580EXII and in doing so I lost the high speed sync, leaving me stuck at 1/250th shutter speed. That's murder when shooting someone going by you at 30 mph! I suppose if I had the opportunity to pan with the riders, it might work, but where I was standing I couldn't do that. I agree that having the blur behind the rider would be an awesome effect!

Interesting to see the Subway rider in your photos. World Champ Hayden Godfrey also of Subway is doing some criterium racing here in the WI / IL area this week. Great to see him here before he heads back to NZ for their summer.
