I'm getting a 20D. What CF card would you get and how big? I was thinking about a Sandisk Ultra 1gig. Then maybe down the road getting a second one.
Thanks,
Chris

I would get a 1GB Sandisk Extreme 3 card. Its slightly faster than the Lexar 80x on your 20D and quite a bit faster when you xfer your pictures to your computer.

I too use the Sandisk Extreme III. However, also just bought a 1gig Sandisk Ultra II and it caused a camera error... bad disk. Replaced it with a new one (thank you STAPLES for exchanging it without a hassle) and everything works good now. I heard there were some issues with the Lexar but never used them at all... always Sandisk.

The blood is in the water...
Anyway, my usual rant about CF cards for the 20D: If you are not shooting rapid fire up to 24 frames in JPG, or 6 frames in RAW, then any good card really goes. I started with cr*ppy only 16x cards at first, only noticed issues in download speed. From some of the prices I have seen the rule of diminishing returns is alive and well in this market. I have a some 66x cards and I can shoot all the way out to 30 frames in JPG before it slows down.
Just keep to known brands!

I've read of a few problems with Lexar cards, this is the first thread I remember anyone saying anything bad about Sandisk. The Extreme range are overkill for most people, unless you shoot in extreme environments, the performance is about the same too. I use Sandisk Ultra II.

Bought both about a month ago
Kingston Elite Pro 1 GB - $75
ScanDisk Ultra II 1 GB - $78
Both are pretty much work the same. Need nothing faster then that except if you want faster read times transferring to the Computer.

SanDisk Ultra II - Fast, reliable and reasonably priced. I found the SanDisk Ultra II to be faster than the Lexar Pro 80 so I sold my Lexar and bought another SanDisk.

That's the one I have as well--no problems with my 20D.

Having payed so much for the same 20D camera, I thought a Sandisk Ultra 512 MB was enough! It bares a little over 200 pics in medium quality, wich I think is more than enough for a day of photo.
I will still have another 256 MB card that Canon offers, so I believe I'll have more than enough for some time...

Sure, until you decide you want to shoot in RAW and start getting about 90 images per GB! :D

Try this website if you want to compare card speeds:

Sure - just remember that a bunch more people around here are still using D30s and D60s than are still using Win3.1. Even I have progressed to WfWg.

I bought an Extreme III merely for the fact that I would get fast downloads to the computer when the new cardreaders come out. Anyone heard when they are to be released?

I'm new to DSLR and "real" photography in general. But I've been shooting dig with my A70 for a couple years, so take my opinion with a grain of salt...
I've had a 256mb Ultra 2 since they first came out and it was wonderful in my A70 though overkill admitadly.
I've gone with a 1GB Extreme 3 for my new 20d as 2GB cards basically don't exist and I can't afford a 4GB.
The difference for rapid shooting is noticeable for both JPED and RAW in clearing out the buffer and total number of shots at various settings. The difference in downloading pix is pretty significant, and would probably be more so if I had a better card reader instead of my el cheapo. I feel its was worth it as the card was only $12 more than the best price I could find on the Ultra 2.
BTW - the word on the street is that Apple is buying up all the Extreme CF cards they can for their iPod Shuffles, so supplies will be limmited for a while.

I have SanDisk Ultra II 4GB on my 20D. It works fine with ripid shooting. However, It can only hold up to about 380 pics (RAW + JPED) before I need to transfer the pics to my PC. It's okay for day-to-day use, but it would not be enough for extended trips.

I use a 1GB Sandisk Extreme III card. Very fast in my 20D. SanDisk is the only brand I've ever used. I've used them for 7 years and I've never had a single problem with them.

Isn't CF little too big to fit into a Ipod Shuffle? I could see it fitting into the MINI, But I think they use MDs.

How effective have people found faster cards for speeding up 'chimping' - zooming around on a frame in playback mode, and jumping between pictures? Do faster cards make a big difference here?

Onto the original post: I use a Sandisk extreme III 1GB and it seems to work well....I have also used my Lexar 80X and it seems to work well too.
However, I will have to let you know because I have only taken about 50 shots with my 20D since I got it yesterday

Shouldn't make any difference at all. By the time you've got it up on the screen, the whole file's been read into the cameras on-board RAM. It might make a slight difference in load time in going between pictures, but the rendering process would doubtless dwarf that.

Yes, I can see that once the image is cached, the card speed is not important.
Anyone got experience of using slow and fast cards to know in practice if flicking between pictures in playback mode is actually faster with faster cards?

I use a 2GB Lexar 80X card. I chose it because B&H had the 20D offered with it at a very reasonable price. The only time I lost an image was when I made the stupid mistake of turning the camera off too soon. I like the card and probably will get another as soon as the boss lets me ( I spent way too much on my monster order up front).

The Extreme III are going to be faster than the Lexar 80x of course.
But the Lexar is the better value if you are going up against the Extreme II.
You need atleast 1 Gig.
I have the Lexar 1GB 80x. Performs very well, very well(I shoot in the RAW format 98% of the time).

I have Sandisk Ultra II 2 gig and Ultra II 512MB. I love my 2 gig and have never had any problems with it, but lately I've been getting nervous having 200 images (that cannot be replaced) on one card in the middle of the desert. I have the 512mb and 1 gig for backups "in the field". If I'm 3 miles out on a train and find great subject, I will swap cards 1/2 way through (along with other precautions like shooting raw + jpg, bracketing exposure, etc). So far, so good...
