I know exactly what you mean. I just sold a f/4L w/ collar on ebay for $660! AND, it's grey market not to mention that I'm the 3rd owner... interesting people...

Maybe one reason is the cost on this side of the Atlantic. My camera shop has that lens on special offer at the moment reduced from €1399 to €999 or about $1600 - $1150. I will not tell you how much I paid for my 70-200 IS L f.2.8 - painful.

I must admit - that is why I sell a lot of my stuff on ebay. I can get close to retail for it. A guy just bought my 75-300 IS for $405. You can get it brand new at B & H for $410. Can't beat that!

I never ever bid on anything on ebay unless I now what it costs retail. I figure if it is in almost new condition and I can get it for 25-35% off retail on ebay I'll bid on it. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't.

I did pick up a like new McTavish 9'0" Fireball for $360 this year though (it's a surfboard). They sell new for around $800. That was a hell of a deal.
