looking for a new landscape lens
can anyone reccommend one that does not have a rotating front element
is there an idiot proof way of using cokin filters on a rotating element?
currently only have 18-55 kit lens

A popular one here (I love mine) is the 17-40L. Relatively cheap compared to other L's as well!

If it's landscapes you're after, it's hard to beat Canon's EF-S 10-22!

What camera are you using? Crop or full frame sensor? Makes a difference, I love my Canon 10-22 but it will ONLY work on the crop sensors.

Any lens can be a "landscape lens". What did you have in mind...UWA, WA, telephoto? I use everything from a UWA to long zooms in my landscape shooting...would help to know where your interest lies.

I love the 17-40 as well. I have it on a 30D and it's great. I hear it works even better on a full-frame.

got a 40d
i dont think i need a uwl
would a 24-105 work as it would also double as a short zoom?

Indeed. About 70% of my landscape shots are done with the 70-200mm.

I use a 40D with a 24-105 virtually superglued onto the camera, for just about everthing including landscapes in fact having just got a 300f4 I am wondering if a really need my 70-200 anymore the 24-105 seems to do just about everything if you can live with f4

I just rented a 10-22mm, so much fun! The 22mm end gets you out of UWA territory, which is nice. You have to learn how to use a wide angle properly though.

I agree with this too! On the 5D, this lens is stunning. I'm getting a bit of blurring on the edges when shot at 17mm, but it makes for some stunning images!

Notice the blurring in the Upper left corner from how wide it is on the 5D:confused:

I have a 17-40mm for my main landscape lens as well. Highly recommended.
On your camera body you might find the 24-105mm still a bit long at 24mm, depending on what you photograph. Set your 18-55mm lens to 24mm and see if you find that field of view restrictive for your subjects.

+1 for the 10-22 - I just got this lens back in March and I have taken so many different shots with it. It really is an amazing lens.

70-200 F/4, or 200mm 2.8 Prime, or 300mm prime. Tele lens can be used for landscape too you know.

Spoken like someone who has never used an UWA...
The best thing you can do is NOT try an UWA- ignorance is bliss!

I completely agree, I shoot with the nikon 12-24 and found hard to put down. Ultra sharp and having such a huge wide angle is great

I agree with the folks who have answered before me about the use of UWA,
either 10-22 on a 40D type camera or the 17-40 on the full frames.
The perspective distortion can make some artistic shots.
Also consider the 24-105 and taking multiple shots to stitch into a panorama.
Pano is a great landscape technique.

You certainly wouldn't regret owning an ultra-wide angle lens, but I can imagine plenty of situations where you might wish you had one.
If you haven't seen it already, have a look through the photographs in the lens sample photo archive. The 10-22mm is in there, as are all the other lenses mentioned, so you can get a good idea of what people are doing with each particular lens:

Are there any shops close enough that you rent one to see which you like?
