Just trying some new territory in PS for me. First, what do you think of the picture. Second, does the frame work?

300D/Sigma 105 ~ Converted from RAW to JPG, slight sharpen, & frame.

i think it looks good, but I personally never like my frame to compete with the image for attention

Very true... A more neutral colour would pay more attention to the picture itself. (ie, white/grey).

I love the picture itself, but it still seems a tiny bit soft. It sems that the insects head is in focus, where as I think it should be it's body, since that's where the most detail is.

A little trick that I loooove for flower photography is a bottle of water spray, with a REALLY fine mist, and the lightest sqirt, to put a few fine droplets of water on the subject. However, I've never tried it with insects.

The shot is awesome! I like the focus on the head myself although it would have been great if the body was lined up with the head so that all were in focus because like henleg said there is some interesting features there! But the contrasting beauty of the flower with the menacing looking bug makes for a great contrast.

The frame works because you did a nice job of matching the color, but a solid black one would show off the picture better.

Thanks all! I simplified the frame a little and think this works a little better.

It's OK, but the frame should be bigger to help isolate the pic from whatever background it's on 'cause a light colored bkg will make the pic appear darker, etc. Sort of like this:

You just got to be difficult don't you RbrtPtikLeoSeny!! ;)

Like I said, I really like your original frame too......it's just not good if your truly trying to showcase your 'picture'. Like if you were to put it into a portfolio or something, for 'photography', you want them to know what you can do with a 'camera', not with Photoshop. (And I know these days that line is getting blurred!)

But this is more what I had in mind. See how it just demands that your eyes go into the picture because there's nothing distracting around it?

Is there a special trick in PS to make frames?

Great shot - colours and composition are nice. I agree with some of the other sentiment expressed here - the sampled colour is nice but as a frame it competes. A frame should confine the eye to the image not draw away from it. Simple black looks great.

I like AJMontgomery's frame style in PS (and his fantastic bird photos). You can find it here: (I hope he doesn't mind the publicity)

And I think it would look like this.

BTW - I really like the photo. The DOF doesn't bother me at all and the colors are something. Ugly bug.

Everyone, thanks and this is really great input. I've put this shot a few other places and not much from the peeps in the crowd. But people here add a little input, which really helps.

I'm still experimenting with the frame thing, mainly for web showcase. Ithink if shots were to go into a portfolio, they would have no frames.
