A few from today's fun & games by the Sea. My first Airshow in 2 years meant i was more than a little rusty.
Thanks to the display line being several hundred metres away, even the 50D + 500 prime was short!
1. The Red Arrows opened the show with one of their usual excellent displays..

2. Dutch Air Force F-16 in its very Orange colour scheme.

3. A face only a Mother could love. A Royal Navy Sea King flies in for a Royal Marines beach assault..

5. Seeing a Longbow Apache from this angle would normally mean your day is about to take a turn for the worse..

6. Royal Navy Merlin..

7. Spitfire MK PRXIX of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Not bad for a 63 year old plane...

8. Finally, the main reason i went to the show - XH558, the only airworthy Vulcan in existence.

#1+2 were on the 1DMK2N, the rest were with the 50D. The Sigma 500 f4.5 EX was the lens used in all cases....all were hand held.
Thanks for looking,if you did!

Good ones, but what's that distracting blue stuff behind the aircraft? I've never seen that in Michigan!

Great set. Good to see you had some cooperating weather...we rarely get it in South Texas.

I think "Not pretty, but effective" is the best description!

Interesting to hear you both comment on the weather as we rarely get blue skies & fluffy white clouds here too. The same event last year was wiped out (both days) by thick fog shrouding the coast, whilst 2 miles inland there was blazing sunshine!. We were treated to a fine display by a Dutch F16 which we could hear, but not see...
Today's weather is more typical of the N.E. England...high cloud with rain showers
Thanks for the comments :)

It was my first attempt at "Airshow photography". I certainly made a lot of mistakes on the day but have hopefully learnt from them !!!

Despite you saying "3. A face only a Mother could love. ", that's a very nice photo :)
Are these original size, or have you cropped them?

Nice shots, thanks for sharing them.
My only wonder is why the showline was so far away?? Is that normal British protocol??

Nice shots Geoff. The Vulcan was worth the wait :D. You must've been beside the Marriot? I parked myself on the water's edge at Roker, didn't have the luxury of the 500mm so waders were required with the 120-300;). Bit of a mixed bag for me, a challenge with the strong light. Enjoyed it all the same.

A bit of a mixed bag, some are as shot and some are cropped. I can't remember which are cropped though :)

There are various minimum distances set by the CAA depending on Aircraft type & display speed but the line for Sunderland always seems to be much further out. The Helicopters tend to come in closer but the fast jets are always half way to Norway :)

It was nice to see something a bit different :)

I started off in front of the Commentary box (roughly on the centre line) then moved down to the beach when the Marines finished their display. The light gave me a few headaches too but i was generally happy with what i got.
Definitely a good show and the crowd reaction to the Vulcan said it all...most of them started to leave after it headed north :D
Thanks everyone.

that would be me being one of them, i was more hoping to miss the bad traffic that didnt seem to be that bad.. was really good show but as said the distance out was a bummer but being close to houses can understand that..

Not wanting to add more photos to your thread - http://petrolhead.fotopic.net/c1731271.html
I was there but in a boat about 1/2 mile off the shore and too be honest not the best environment for taking photos. If only I could get the bloody thing to stop rocking :)
