1. The D60 was introduced and first sales began late Feb and early mar last year - - not as you said '6 months ago'.
2. The D60 is no stinker; it is a darn fine piece of equipment and for anyone who has one it will be functioning for many years to come. After the new versions are introduced the D60 will continue to produce great pics. All thge new versions equate to is the natural evolution of a product.
3. The lack of a wide angle lens is rectified by purchasing the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens which will translate to an effectife 25-55mm. Besides the the 1.6 multiplier for lenses was known and mentioned at the time it was introduced.
So what is the beef???????

Where some folks complain about the 1.6 multiplier factor, I find it a help. I've never done wide landscape work, but I've had to do a lot of long telephoto work, so the 1.6 factor helps me shoot long with a given lens.

I think we actually have two interest groups living here -One is the purely technical whiz-bang digital camera mavens, and the other is into the photographic aspects of digital cameras.
Most of us are infected with the digital camera tech side, and can loose site of the prime application of this device- which is -taking great pictures.
With that said, if we forget the hole we fall in called marketing, the question is then- can the D60 take great pictures? Yes it can. Just look at Pekka's Samuel L. Jackson picture on the thread about his new Linear Sharpen beta2 for D60 action- and there is no doubt about it. ..amazing.
Can the D60 make excellent 11"x15" prints? -Yes it can.
Using Pekka's LS D60 beta or BreezeBrowser Raw conversions and Fred Miranda's Scaling Action for Phototshop, output is superb on a consumer Epson printer. It is a photograph.
So, maybe it's time to shut up and take pictures. Of course - that takes a skill and eye that can't be taught on a forum thread...and as was said earlier "no amount of hardware can make up for a lack of photographic skill". The D80 won't make a dam bit of difference in your ability to take a great picture. So, lets get on with it and stop power-whining. If the D60 was the last camera ever made, the photographic world would live on in good style.
Bob
PS: I have yet to match some of the amazing shots I took with my original Oly D600 Plastic digi-SLR...and it was 1.4 MP.

Thank You! looking at some of these pbase galleries of some who have > $5000-6000 in lenses & digital gear... ugh. I mean, if the hardware could do it, this would be a pro forum.... BUT it seems like 90% of any questions are along the lines of "what lens?" and "why does this camera have a less-than-a-dream-machine feature?"
the D30/60s are amazing cameras. How many people here actually need a ton of resolution? so maybe the 20x30" prints my friend (who happens to be a full-time pro) made with his D30 & a $250 consumer zoom (at an top digital lab in the country, but whatever) could be a bit more detailed like the 1Ds, but they look darn good & are VERY sellable. ...from a 3mp camera no less! 8x10s are flawless. I have a D60 & feel like it's more than enough for my needs... but sure, in the one instance that I get an amazing shot to blow up for a crowd... there are ways to make it work...
I agree. just take pictures & get off the equipment high. I like the latest & greatest stuff too, but in the DSLR realm, it's insane. what really matters here?
just my $0.02.
- a satisfied D60 user with no "L" lenses... *gasp*

Hey Thomas has a right to gripe...
The D60 has been side lined quicker than you can watch a fly with tackety boots walk over a barrel of treacle. The 1.6 conversion is a JOKE...who else would pay £2K for a camera to find that their beloved 24mm is now 38mm !!! Naw Thomas has a right to gripe and he will be sick as you all will be if the D90 is full frame...watch the D60 lemmings jump !

Mr EYE
Don't you read my posts...I go through cameras like snow off a dyke...I had 2 D60s for a while and both were faulty...sent back to Canon with the word "SHAME"
inscribed onto the chip...I reside in the video world and have a passion for everything digital...I have had various Canon SLRs T90, EOS-5...I once had an Olympus OM-1 with an f1.2 lens but I digress.
My digital still cameras consist of Finepix 2800 (Great 2MP snapshooter)...just recently got rid of my trusty Olympus E-10 to play with a Sony 717 till the D90 appears...don't get me wrong one of my D60s was very good but having the chance to play with other makers cameras takes away the "D60 must be the best cos the press tell us so" feel to it...I was looking forward to getting some decent glass for my D60 but fate intervened...I am possibly the lucky one now that Canon have pulled it as I am shure that the next D-SLR will be full frame...Don't get me wrong many of you work arround the 1.6 conversion but I personally did not like it and spoiled my love for wide angle photography...in a way it was a blessing that my D60s were faulty because I can now wait for the D90 or the 1Ds to fall in price and to jump back in.
Anyway Mr EYE it's not what you've got in this digital world it's how you use it...I have been in this game professionally for 20 years...more video than photo but as I say "We can all take good photos...some better than others but how many of you can film and edit TV programmes...same skills for both...composition, colour balance, focus etc. Good video production takes you to a new level in photography...so Mr EYE don't judge a book by it's cover, just because I do not own a D60 at this moment does not mean I don't know how to kick your ass...photographically that is...!!!

DV, I think you are lost...the forum for video editors is two doors down on the left, right next to the ladies room!
Hehe...
Do you really compare still photography to video and lump them in the same pile? You have got to be kidding.
That's funny.
Why did it take you 2 D60's before you figured out they were not up to the quality you demand in your equipment?
Good luck with the next "Blair Witch Project".

I can see it now...the D90 is out...it is 9mp and full-frame...it's priced a little higher than the D60..like $3500 USD/Euros (oops, I forgot that DVW has to pay rediculous govenrment taxes on gear) - and IT will be full of problems..first run firmware bugs...etc.
And, the focusing will be better..but still flawed. The Auto white balance will still be tricked by changing light conditions...and there will be new flaws!
The camera will then go through the same feeding-frenzy on Ebay. It will be 9 months till you can get one at list price in 3 days from a reputable vendor.
I thought about selling my new D60 for about 2 minutes. I WILL not go through the new-camera marketing process again. Not for a new set of problems.
Hey, If I had to pay 2x in british pounds for tech gear, I'd be really pissed too. Luckily for us (US), this is the cheapest place to buy gear in the world.
Go forth, make pictures...and DVW...go back to video- it pays better (I always make more at video shoots!)

It takes more skill to produce a video...I know...I do both.

Staying with you yankidoodle dandies.. yes you always have got cheap gear...well good for you.
UK = pay through the nose and add a further 33% on top.
Just think how well payed we must be to afford all this inflated gear...I will send a few dollars to Hawkeye to buy me some cheap "L" glass.

OK....Are we through here? I doubt it! DVW- I hope you have finally typed out enough venom- to fully discharge your grief about your unlucky experience with the two D60s. It's had all the effect it's going to have- and it's now wasting bandwidth on an otherwise high-level discussion forum.
Go burn the VX-2000, or XL-1s on the video forums...both of them have serious problems. Enjoy! While you are doing that, we D60 owners will be making amazing pictures.
This camera is still selling at list price- and the Nikon 6mp is being discounted. Why?... the image is better.
It is a burn- the prices you have to pay over there. ..and we know the pay-differencial is non-existant.
Have fun!
Bob
PS: Sorry that Tony has hitched your national policy to ours like mobile home to a pick-up truck. It is not a good idea. Who is driving now?!

Dear DV Warrior, If you can't walk the walk, and successfully use a D60, keep the talk to yourself.

Pardon...am I missing something... how can you successfully use "duff" gear...I never once said that all D60s were mince...far from it. Don't you want to know what problems other people are having with £2K gear.
Someone talks about "Gray" gear well it's the boxpusher I would steer clear of...no chance of getting a camera or lens returned without hassle.

Very interesting thread... nothing about photography .. something about a pickup truck and a mobile home and national policy. Very interesting .. is the UN going to become something of the past.. will elections be won by ballots cast or decided by courts of law or by force of power?

Early adopters of any new technology will always pay the highest price, I'm still waiting to purchase a digital SLR, but having owned Coolpix 990 for over 2 years I think now the time is right. Canon look like they will steal a march on Nikon, if the D90 is full frame and 9Mp I'll be selling my Nikon gear and joining you ! I agree with you, having paid for a prime wideangle lens I object to the fact they are no longer as wide as was intended. As far as I can see Nikon will be producing new lenses to match 3/4 frame SLR bodies, I for one will not be buying them. I never thought APS was a good idea either.

So what is the beef???????
OK, so 11 months ago. Still a pretty short shelf life.
My beef? Unreliability. I have had mine for 3 months. Shutter died after one week of use. Body completely died last week. Two repair trips to Canon in three months. Not a very good record. My experience apparently is not unique.

I had a conversation with the Canon dealer I have worked with for almost 3 years. He told me DO NOT buy a D60 now but wait until he gets back from the show with info on the new cameras.
He is a major dealer and got some of the first shipments of the D30 and the D60 shortly after release. He didn't have specs he could share about the new models, but he is a good friend and strongly suggested I hold off until after the show.
Just my two cents,

John M. Please post whatever information your friend provides. For my money, which I refused to spend on the D60, they're going to have to do better with the next modle or it may be several years before I jump into getting a d-slr.
