Only just got the 430 and am having trouble with the 40D locking up randomly.
I think it has something to do with auto zoom because I half press the shutter and hear the flash adjust and then the camera goes into busy mode and stays there. The only way to get it back is pull the main battery.
Any one have this trouble before?

Never.
This only happens when the flash is on the camera?
If so, have you made sure there's no dirt that has accumulated on the contacts between camera and flash?

Wat firmware are you running? I had this issue a few times with my 40D/550EX. Nowadays it works perfectly with the 550EX and my 430EX. I'm trying to remember way back, but it seems like one of the firmware upgrades addressed this...

Never happend before I put the 430 on the camera in 2 odd years.
I have set the flash to manual zoom and it seems to have fixed it. I should also add I have Kenko tubes between camera and flash.

Ok I checked Canon's site for the firmware update and there's no mention of this problem. I may update but not sure it will make a difference

... I have Kenko tubes between camera and flash.Ha-ha, if that's really true, then no wonder you have problems! :D
Does the problem go away if you take the tubes away from in between the camera and lens (which is where I hope you actually have them...)?
