I downloaded the Canon RAW codec and installed it hoping I would be able to now see thumbnails in winexplorer, instead whenever I open a folder with my 5d2 raw files it crashes winexplorer and I have to re-boot to get my system to come back.... ouch....
ideas?
Help?

I suggest reinstalling the codec. And you never need to restart to get explorer.exe back and working, just bring up the task manager and use "run" function, then type "explorer.exe" and you are done.

I was hoping the codec would give me a way to view my 5dmk2 raw image thumbnails in win XP?
It would sure make things easier if I could see what was in those folders...

For the first part, just get the most updated version on the canon site. And don't know why you have PAE enabled when you have less than 3gb memory, is your video card over 1gb? PAE may be causing it to crash somehow, though likely just an old codec was the issue.
For the second part, that's why people use LR2, Aperture, and even bridge (though to a much lesser extent). A proper photography program like LR2 will let you organize your images WITHOUT folders (or at least without worrying about them).

I downloaded the latest codec off the canon site just friday so I don't think it is a stale codec issue...
I am not sure what PAE is? What is it and how would I turn it off? Graphic card is radeon x600 but I don't have the specks
Bridge is great but also rather slow compared to opening a file in windows explorer.... Win Explorer will make a file once all the thumbs are loaded and you will not have to re-load them again after that, plus win explorer places 4 images on the folder so you have an idea what is inside.
With bridge I have to wait until it builds the thumbnails every time I open a file...this can take several minutes with 5dmk2 raw files... (anyway to fix this?)
Also with bridge the folders are just plain minila folder icons, I don't know what is inside... (Anyway to fix this?)
Thanks again for the response...

The codec is crashing for the same reason Bridge takes a long time to build the thumbmail previews.
Your computer is simply out dated, woefully so, and is being worked beyond its limits.
Up grading it will not help, it needs to be replaced with a new one.
To give you an idea of how out date it is, the original 5D did not exist, even as a concept, when your computer was considered average spec.
