300 f4 IS with the Canon 2x T-con and a 1D MK II.
The 300f4 IS I have and the 1D MK II, hopefully, by the end of the month.
I have the 1.4x T-con, which is superb and hardly ever off this lens.
I know with the 1D MKII this combo will still AF, but what I would like to know is by how much the image quality will suffer with the 2x T-con.
I'm breaking one of my b---s buying the 1D MK II, but I'll break the other if the 2x T-con is worth it.
Any info appreciated.

Both image quality and autofocus will drop off rahter dramatically.
You wll need LOTS of light.. shooting wide open at f/8 with a 2X t-con won't offer the best results either.. to get the best out of the 2X you'll need to stop down... so your shutter speeds will plummet,. and low shutter speeds + 600mm = very difficult shooting.
Best case scenario.. the 2X may be helpfull in a pinch.. but I never really liked the 2X very much.. even on my best primes.
The 1.4X is a totally different story of course.

I agree with CDS, 1.4 was totally acceptable but the 2x was a real problem. Of course that may just be me. (sorry this was with the 100 - 400L)

I owned a 2x for a while and boy did everything suffer. In the end I wasn't using it and just accepting that sometime 300 wasn't close enough. It made its way to ebay so someone else can elarn the same lesson. :)

Thanks guys, I think I'll take the 2X off my shopping list.
I guess I was being a bit greedy, hoping to get a reasonable 600mm from a good 300mm.
OK....... so now I've got £240 to play with. :)

How about a 1.4x with a 100-400L and a 1D MKII, INSTEAD of a 600mm prime (for 7 grand). I already have the 100-400L, and the TC is what, $400?... so it would actually be a lot less, and I could sell my 20D and get the rebate?

When the 1D MK II arrives I will be trying it.
I don't think, however, it will come anywhere close to the 600mm prime, not by a long long way.

I've got it a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II. :)
Or is the Extreme III any good with the 1D MK II.
