Im not sure if this is the right place to post this one. Its a very old part of Perth Zoo.. No longer used of course.. They have kept it here so we can see how much the conditions have improved. It is now a very beautiful place! It was used for quite some time tho, because I can remember visiting here at about 6 years of age, and seeing bears and hyena's in here! (am now 36) Not great shots at all, just thought I would show ya all lol

Thanks for sharing. I suppose it's not being used for animals at the moment.

Sandi,

Just going back through some old posts of yours (always like to see what fellow Perthites are up to) and just wanted to mention that these cages were actually far worse than they even appear here. The 'floors' were bare concrete and there was usually nothing in the cages for the animals to play with. I clearly remember seeing these on a school excursion (I'm a little older than you) and it obviously had a big impact on me.

I'm awaiting the arrival of my 'bigger' lens before I revisit the zoo as I haven't been there for years. Hope it's a better day than today though (although the rain's great)!

Hey Simon, thanks for having a look at my posts! Are you a Northy or Southy? Heaps of rain, yes, but a few of my favorite things are rain and thunderstorms..... and silence, because its a rare thing! Lol. I will be looking forward to seeing more of your work when the big L arrives!

Sandi, I'm a 'Northy', but only just :-) Those not in Perth must be wondering what we're on about. We'll leave it for them to try and work out. I love this weather too, but 12c outside at the moment is a bit of a shock to the system! The gas fire's been on all day for the first time this year. I am dying for both the 10-22 and the 70-200 to turn up. Only about 20 more sleeps.

Cheers,

Simon....

Ah, so finally all the Perth members come crawling out of the woodwork!:D

Perhaps we can turn this into a "Sandgroper" thread?!

(all those outside of W.A. will of course wonder what the heck I'm on about...);)

I'm sure Google will resolve that one, JK. To be honest, I've been here (POTN) for a while, but mainly hanging around the equipment forums. Just decided to have a wander down here this afternoon while a little bored. I think I'll stay if that's okay? ;)

I used to use DPreview a lot, but the Canon forums are so 'stuffy' and so unlike the forum I came from, which POTN reminds me of.

Sandgropers unite.

Whatever happened to those sandgropers anyway ? One day, they (along with Fat Cat, Percy and Flapper) all just disappeared! It's a conspiracy I tells ya!

I'm a "southie" as well. Man was it cold today... cold and wet and the weather will be the same for the rest of the week...brrr!

I had to look it up. Knew you WA's guys were sandgropers, but just got curious as to how the name came about :-)

Exactly, I remember the furry ones too, they were a Telethon thing and, IIRC, are a collectors item these days!

The competition is called "Your Amazing Pictures". To enter, fill out the entry form and tick the appropiate category box (People and Places, or Nature and Animals). Send your completed entry form and photograph to the Sunday TImes, to arrive by Thursday 23rd June. The entrant who is judged the best entry in their category will win a Nikon D70 digital camera valued at $1999. Entry forms are only available in the Sunday TImes and NO entries can be send by email.

Seeing as there is a few of us, we should try and get together at some stage. I'm not sure what you all like to shoot but the zoo is always good as well as Caversham Wildlife Park up at Whiteman Park. If there's enough interest...

Read the competition rules very carefully. No, not the big print ones, the small print ones buried in the back of the paper .

I'm just not prepared to submit any photo under those conditions.

I did read them, I didn't think they were too bad. What is it that you don't like about them?

SimonBl

From my reading of it and if I recall correctly, the publisher (a very large multinational) retains the rights to publish as they see fit with no compensation.

I could be wrong, will need to re-read it - just checked on their website and can't find the conditions there....

Oh, OK, I did read that!..I would imagine most competitions are the same. You get a prize and then they can do what they like with your pic?...I guess there isn't much you can do about it!..The prize would kinda make up for it :)

just saw this now Simon

thanks.
delighted you were over and liked it here.
I was over in Oz twice
my brother (who lives in Sydney) started out in Perth many, many years ago
drove his volkswagon all the way to Sydney at some stage later on,
met an English girl and started married life there.
family all grown up now .

thanks again

I'll re-read the conditions tomorrow (if I can bring myself to buy a copy) and respond then, rather than making potentially false accusations now

Simon....

PS: Just 'cos I'm not going to, doesn't mean you shouldn't!

I know this is OT for this thread, but here are the rules of the "Your Amazing Pictures" competition currently running in Perth that mean I won't be entering (my bolding):

4) By entering this competition, readers have given their permission for their photograph, caption, name and suburb to be published at the discretion of the Sunday Times without any fee being paid or approval being sought....

26) ... The Sunday Times may use all entrants names and addresses and any winners name, suburb and photograph for future promotional, marketing and publicity purposes without any fee being paid or approval sought.

So, you're giving away your rights to say whether or not they can use your photograph in the "Sunday Times Photographs of Western Australia" hardback book, priced at $59.95 out in time for Christmas. Hypothetical, yes, but as Joh would have said, "Just you wait and see".

Maybe I'm a cynical old bugga, but I don't trust 'em.

Just another 'Sandgroper' logging in.

Great pictures Skade. I can remember the zoo that way!

BTW great suggestion of Paul_O's re: getting together for a shoot. I'll definitely be in that.
