Good angle, where were you shooting from?

Looks like the exit of the third turn and the north short chute. That's the only area where you can get a clear view of the track from a decent distance without a fence in the way.

I think it is (looking at the tents/trailers in the background) but credentialed media can get those same shots from the south end.

You're right DC Fan -------- Turn 3 and the start of the short chute. I have been fortunate to have been issued a credential for all of the Brickyard 400's and the last 39 Indy 500's.
The third turn is last remaining places where you are not shooting thru a fence. Good light all day, easy access, and did I mention NO fence.

To explain this situation to those who haven't spent four decades at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (and this writer started going to that track in 1967):

This is the inside of the Speedway's third turn. The credentialed photo area is behind the low fence that's around 20 feet behind the inside guardrail. Years ago, all of the areas inside the turns were like this.

For the last ten years, since the construction of the infield road course, the insides of the Speedway's turns have looked like this. The exit of the fourth turn is pictured. You either have to find a spot where the fencing has been removed between the heavy steel cables that aren't obvious in this image, or hope that you don't have a part of the fence in the way at the wrong time.

For spectators, typically there's at least one fence in the way, and sometimes two.
