View Full Version : RAW Thumbnails on a Digital Rebel

When shooting RAW, the rebel saves two files. The CRW file (RAW) and a THM file (THuMbnail, I assume). Problem is, my pc (Windows XP with Servicepack 2 running and Photoshop CS installed) does not recognize either of those formats when browsing the folders on the desktop. Generally, I can switch a folder to Thumbnails view and get a quick peek of what photos are in there. When I shoot raw, I cant! All I see is generic Icons. This is a real pain because I need to lauch PSCS every time I want to look for pictures to show people. Does anyone know how to...
A) set the rebel settings to use JPG for it's thumbnail, instead of the THM
B) or set Windows preferences to show thumbnails when browsing folders outside of any applications
Any help would be fabulously appreciated!!!:)

Those .thm files are the thumbnails that show on your camera LCD screen. I don't even bother copying those to the hard drive (unless you want ALL exif data - they contain some *insignifficant exif info). As for the CRW files, you can open them with other software like irfanView (it's fast, and free)

a) is not possible.
You can setup XP to treat *.thm files as though they were jpg files. You need to associate the correct program to do that.
But You won't be able to get XP on its own to display the actual raw files. For that You need either PS to do that or the software that came with 300D or alternative software. For example ThumbsPlus from www.cerious.com has a plugin that allows it to show the raw files.

Itreats them as jpegs when opening but still doesn't show a true thumbnail. That sucks, if I just click and open the "Photography" folder in my desktop and set the view to thumbnails, I still cant see what pictures are there. Just stupid generic icons. I know that the 20D has jpeg thumnails where you can actually see what's in the folder before opening it and that's what I want to do. Thanks for the help, anyone else have any insight into "teaching" XP how to display a thumbnail photo?

As Tommy stated, you need to associate the correct program to that type of file. In other words, you specify to XP that .CRW files should be opened by one certain program.
There is another trick, if you choose. There is a utility program called CRWthumbnailer. You install that, which associates .CRW to it. Then, within XP's file browser, you will can choose to see the whole bunch of thumbnail views.

I found this utility about a year ago and it does that, allows you to see RAW thumbnails right off windows explorer.
I hope this helps.

I generally don't bother to download the .thm either. I would usually just process all the pics I want. Then Burn a copy of the RAW files. I personally use C1 PhaseOne Pro to process the RAWs. There is a free SW call RAWshooter that you can use to process the RAWs more efficiently then PSCS. Process them in JPEG to save space and you can view them when ever you want. I usually process the pics want in TIFF16 to MOD in PSCS.

You most definately want to install the MS patch for RAW files. It makes a huge difference in my work pattern. Along with the CS2 RAW plug-in, it makes working with them almost as easy as JPG.

I'll third the MS RAW viewer, just make sure you have service pack 2 installed.

If you check the date of the original post the RAW viewer wasn't available yet. BTW there is a registery hack that will allow you to view the .thm file as thumbnails.

The MS one, Powertoy I believe, is fantastic. I installed it without telling my wife and she emailed CR2 fils to her grandmother not realizing they were RAW files. Now she knows to check before she sends. It is so much easier than using ZoomBrowser or DPP.

Hope her grandmother has broadband. Even one RAW at 56K will take forever, if it doesn't exceed the ISP's max. attachment size.

She does, but has no way to view it. I had my wife convert them and resend.

She would have disinherited your wife if she'd d/led over a 56 K line and then found she couldn't see them!

If she had 56K we would be sending 100KB mini files.;)
