I'm going to see the Mariners play at Safeco Field the second weekend in August. I wonder if I can take photos during the game. Will probably rent a 100-400 for the game.

Will probably rent a 100-400 for the game.

Since they have a 200mm restriction, rent the 70-200/2.8L IS instead. And maybe a 1.4x TC.

I have had no trouble bringing in my camera to the games although I've never attempted to bring along any of my "big lenses"

I know at Qwest they have a 6" lens policy... I was hasseled by security over my 135 L with the hood on, but once I took the hood off it was all good... I thought it was strange

Or rent a 200/2L IS. How awesome would it be to walk in with that and a 2x extender, and show them their own rule so they have to let you in with that big lens?

I got into Yankee Stadium once with my 300/4L IS and that was borderline. I had to convince the guy it was ok since I was sitting in the upper deck and wouldn't be in anyone's way with it.

I'm just thankful that they have a specific, written rule. I don't like it when it just says "no professional camera equipment"... what exactly is that supposed to mean?

But when they say no longer than 6" or not greater than 200mm zoom, then I'll fully comply with that.

I also always print out the webpage... if they security checker has any doubts, they'll have an easier time letting you through after seeing the same guidelines.

Thanks you all! I'll bring my 70-200/4L IS and 1.4 TC.

BTW I hope you are going to see the visiting team... the Mariners season essentially went into the toilet this past weekend....

I never had trouble with a 200 and a doubler at safeco, but saw a guy being hassled about the "big white lens" he was carrying- I don't know if it was a 70-200 or not. He probably got it in anyway, Safeco is very cool.
I a;ways took a 135 and a 200 with a doubler. I had 135,200,270 and 400 covered. I have since sold the lenses to buy a 70-200, and then sold the 70-200 to get back into the 135 and 200. we learn by doing around here.

My wife wants to see Ichiro at least once. A whole busload of us are coming up from that other NW city to the South, having a BBQ lunch and seeing the game.

BTW: I changed my mind about the lens I'm bringing. Although not longer than 200 mm, the WHITE 70-200/4L might looked too "professional". So I'm not taking any chances and bringing my XTi, 17-55/2.8, black 200/2.8L and 1.4 TC.

Didn't see this when I replied to Simply Ravishing. No white lens for me. Going to take all black lenses.

My stadium requires lenses just to be under 12", Which means I can bring my 300 2.8 with me just not hood.

I've never had a problem with the Brewers and I usually bring the 100-400. Each stadium is different. I know the Packers have a 9 inch rule. If I were you I would rent the 70-200 2.8 and bring a 1.4 with.

for the rental cost, you could upgrade to seats that would allow you to use a 24-70. Safeco is a great place to see a game, especially about twenty rows back behind homeplate, right under the broadcast booth. watch out for seagulls in the 9th inning- how do they know when to show up for the free popcorn after the game?

FYI just got back from Safeco and walked in with my gripped 40D and 70-200 f2.8L attached slung over shoulder. 1.4TC was in pocket just in case and there was no issue at all getting in. Probably could have had TC on as well. Images from game are in a thread near here as well as www.cjscons.com/mariners/aug11
