O.K., this is my situation. I am very, very close to being a father. Like any day now. I am looking to buy a lens for taking portraits on my child. I am looking at 3 lens in particular.

Sigma 28-70mm f2.8
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8

That canon is way out of my budget unless someone wants to sell me one for $400 :)

Any suggestions? My only concern with the Tamron is that I've heard you have a 50/50 chance of getting a good copy. Oh, I have a 20D.

My Tamron's fine, no problems at all, very sharp and quick to focus - not quite as quick as my L or USM lenses but easily good enough. I can't comment on the Sigmas.

I have no experience with any of the 3, but based on owners' accounts that I've seen, the Tamron is the best choice. The only weakness is that it doesn't really go wide on the 20D. But you can always pick up a 20 mm or a wide zoom in the future.

The Tamron seems to be the most popular. I'd ignore the 28-70, that's an older model. Instead, take a look at the 24-60 and the 24-70. The Sigma seems to focus better than the Tamron, I'd take that instead.

No lens recommendation, but congrats on the baby!

Yeah congratulations, its a blast. Tiring, but worth it.

What lenses do you have already? If you already have a normal zoom something like the 50 1.4 (or 1.8) would be a great choice. I get a lot of my kids photos (5 and 3 now) with an 85.

I just got the 28-70mm Tamron in the mail today. I need to take it out an get some real tests done but so far I'm very excited about it.

I was not aware that this was an older model. Are the newer 24-60 and 24-70 about the same price? :(

I have a 17-85IS, but it doesn't seem it will be fast enough for taking pics of my child. I have a 50 1.8 as well that I've gotten some great shots of my dogs with, but I want to add a zoom.

And thanks. The wife started having contrations, but nothing consistant or strong enough. I may not have time to but the lens :)

You'll be fine with the 50. I think you've got more to worry about. Hope everything goes fine. Hope your ready for months of frequent sleep interuptions. :)

Absolutely no problems with the Tamron here. For what it's worth.

Congrats on the family addition!!

Thanks. So now I need to decide between the tamron and the sigma 28-70. I'm thinking of buying the sigma and if it doesn't work out return it for the tamron.

I'm leaning twoard the sigma, even though the Tamron is so highly recommended because of my luck with the Sigma 150 Macro and my Bigma.
