The first picture is my dog, Charlie, in his new raincoat.
Second one is my good friend's little girl, Lilly.

I know I'm not the greatest, and I'm pretty much a n00b to the whole dSLR thing...any comments/suggestions etc. appreciated.

White balance and focus are off in the first

Second is sweet, but look for composition before snapping..( avoiding body parts, lol, that maybe shouldn't be in the shot?)

What about like this? I just did the auto color in PS. I don't know why I didn't think about that before.
I didn't really think much about the focus; I figured it was cool because HE was in focus and everything else behind him was blurry...? Or is that not the right way to think about it?

As far as the second one, I almost told her mom to move out of the way, lol...but I figured it might distract Lilly and I wouldn't be getting that same cute expression.

Thanks for your comments. :)

Actually, Charlies hood on the coat is sharp, but the focus did miss his left side of the face.

What do you have the camera set at?

I see you had the ISO at 800? Thats too high for a still shot? Try 200-400.you won;t get the shake nor blur.

Honestly, I have no clue what ISO means, or how to change it. I'm still just doing the automatic feature...I really need to figure more out, lol.

In all seriousness.read the manual about settings.it makes or breaks any photo. Take it off Auto, and try AV or P.it allows you to manually focus and have the settings proper for what you are shooting. Its fun! Any questions, just type in a search here and 99% of the time it will be here.

Here is a link that you WILL use.

That you should do, your camera has great potential, little of which you will be able to take advantage of in the automatic settings. Read your manual, and do some research on the interwebs to get yourself started. Also mess around with your camera at the different manual settings to see what different things actually do. Here's a link to get you started.
