But with the official announcement of the Hybrid IS having so much to say about its uses to macro photography, which Macro lens(or lenses) do you guys think Canon will roll out first? It has been a LONG time since they updated any of them.
Their ages are as follows. (Listed oldest to newest).
EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro (12/1987 - an original lineup lens practically)
EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM (04/1996)
MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro (09/1999)
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (03/2000 which replaced the non-USM which came out in 04/1990 - a 10 year gap, its been 9 years since, so it may make a 2nd 10year anniversary upgrade path)
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM (03/2005 - upgrading this lens would make it the first TRUE "II" EF-S lens, I doubt thats happening, but who knows... on a side note, it is funny how there is total 11 EF-S models ever produced and 5 of em are 18-55's (Canon Museum EF-S Page Link) (http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/ef/ef-s.html))

My gut tells me it will be the 180mm L that gets the update. I don't see them updating the 50mm since they just released the 60mm EF-S... The 100mm Macro USM doesn't really need an upgrade IMO. The L lens could use an update, some reviewers have complained about its resolution being a little lacking for a lens of its price class. The AF could stand to be improved as well as it may be the slowest-focusing lens in Canon's lineup now.

the 50mm f/2.5 CM is a full frame lens... not EF-S
and its 22 years old... it NEEDS an update.

Certainly not the MP-E. If it's wound out to 5x, it's getting far too little light for IS to be of any help, and equally, you need that thing mounted on a sturdy tripod with some MLU loving. The 50mm and 60mm seem to short to get any benefit, and the 100mm just seems too good anyway. I'd put my money on the 180L - it's got a longer range so it's more in need of IS, and they can spraypaint the subwavelength coating on the front element and jack the price more. It's what I'd do if I was Canon.

I'm surprised it's not discontinued. Why would anyone with a FF camera want such a short working distance? Not to mention having to buy the Lifesize Converter.

Agree, strange way to start a rumor thread.

If it weren't for the rumors of the 5DMarkII a few years ago I would now be the owner of a Nikon D300 or similar model. I am so thankful that those rumors caused me to step back and take a better look, especially with respect to converting to Canon FF from Nikon crop. I deliberate for a long time prior to making a major purchase (for me, that is) and these rumors help me to better figure out what my requirements are, instead of what Canon or Nikon marketing wants to offer me.
That said, if something out there is not really exactly what I would like to have, the rumors help me to shape my requirements. I don't take them as gospel, but more like a tool in my decision making. That said, I was planning on buying a 70-200f/2.8IS to augment my 70-200f/4IS but now I'm stepping back and going to wait. I don't really need this lens now. I do need it in the middle of January for a trip but that's over 5 months away. For such a major purchase on something I don't need for 5 months I read each of these rumors very carefully. I have plenty of glass now to get me by, I'm not starting up my rig.
It's not a waste of time for someone like me with a long time horizon for major capital purchases.

I have to agree that the 180 is a natural for the new IS. but I also expect them to throw it into the 100 and bump the price up. or they may just make a new 100L

I think it'll be on the 180L. It's overdue for a replacement. The AF is slow and it hunts like a dog in anything less than direct sunlight it seems. I find it pretty balanced, but I do agree that IS would make this lens a whole 'nother animal.

EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM (03/2005 - upgrading this lens would make it the first TRUE "II" EF-S lens,
Nope, that's wrong. The 18-55 EF-S also has a II version. Any additional version is obviously enough for Canon to call it an updated lens. And if Canon adds IS to a lens, it will be a new lens. So a 60mm EF-S IS won't get a II designation. You can bank on it. Otherwise the 70-200 f4 IS would have a II.
