I'm very interested in buying one of these (RAYNOX DCR-250 MACRO CLOSE-UP LENS) but I have a Canon xsi camera. Will it work with this camera? Also, if it's compatible, I have 18-55mm and 28-135mm lenses, which is best to use?

It screws onto the front of whatever lens you use, on any camera at all. You'd need to get a 58 mm diameter one for the 18-55 or a 72 mm diameter one for the 28-135. It'll have a greater effect on the 18-55.

The DCR-250 works best with a longer (effective) focal length lens. It's ideal for small sensor cameras like the S3IS, S5IS, etc at full zoom and works well on a 70-300.
On your 18-55 it will be like looking through a toilet roll. It may be usable on the 28-135 (at 135) but you'll still have substantial vignetting.
Unless you have a 300mm lens in your future, you'd probably be better off investing in some tubes.

I thought the raynox fitted a wide range of lens sizes? It looks like it has a pinch-cap type thing one, I'm fairly sure it's a one-size fits all (unlike the many 'close-up' screw-in type filters). I've seen really great results from people using longer lenses, 200, 300mm etc, and it's a cheap and easy way into macro photography!

I had one with my s3is it was great, you have to watch the focussing though, I was going to keep it to use with my 30d but really it sucked, I would just save and buy macro lens or some tubes

The pinch cap thing is an adapter from the Raynox 43mm thread to a fit anything up to about 67mm. It is very convenient.
The Raynox is a three (I think) element lens and the image quality is way better than the screw in close-up filters.
