I would be very leary about something like that. If it looks to good to be true it probably is. I would buy from a reputable company. A lot of folks here seem to like the Genesis or Alien Bees lights and they have a good reputation. It's always cheaper to buy quality first than to replace junk later.

Just my two cents worth.

This is a test with similar strobes I did a long time ago. The 160ws strobes that I had at full power barely got close to 1/8 power on my 320ws photogenics

I would spend those $300 on the calumet gensis light kit.

Friends don't let friends by lights off of ebay. Let us be your friend. Buy quality lights that can be incorporated into a system as you expand. I like alien bees, but have heard good things about the calumet genesis.

The lighting is that bad then? I was looking as those as well as some used lights I had found, they are 2 bogan 400ws 1 bogan 200ws, also 2 photogenic 600 ws with stands, but I don't know what a fair price would be for those, if they are any good and which ones would be the best bet for studio use. Any thoughts? Also, how do you rep on here?

The photogenic would be great, thats a lot of power so you could grow into them. As to what is a fair price would be, depends on condition, age, etc. Pardon my unhipness, but what do you mean by how do you rep on here? I'm old and slow, I just turned 45.....

on some board there is a reputation button, you rep someone to thank them for being helpful, is there something like that on here?
Would I be crazy to try to get the 2 photogenics for 3-400? They can be dialed down to 200 ws if I wanted, right? I am new to this, I have never even touched a light before! :-)
Lol, old and slow at 45 I hardly think so, I am not too far behind!

No rep feature here that I know of. I dont know that light exactly , just by reputation. But yeah most monolights can be powered down to about 1/8 of full power. As for the price, My limit for used lights would be no more than $200 each simply because I could get new alien bees for not much more than that. Of course there is shipping, and the stands to be considered in that as well. I dont know your source for the photogenic, but shoot the guy an offer you are comfortable with, say $300 and see what happens. Dont rush yourself though, if that deal isnt right, you will find some wherever you are. By the way, where are you?

hmm, that may be a good idea, I live in the midwest, closest photo store is 3 hours away, that's why I am researching everything online!

I just got my calumet genesis set in the mail yesterday. I love it so far. It seems to be very good quality stuff. Nothing Cheapy about them. I'm not an expert on this stuff but i can tell well built equipment when i see it. If you want to go on ebay calumet has them on there as well. If you take the time to scroll down to the end of the results list you will see that they have them in inventory with FREE SHIPPING. If you just buy the first one you see from their store on ebay they will charge you like 25-35 shipping on top of the $369.

Ahhh darn. I have an old set of Larson strobosol monolights. They are as old as the hills but still work okay. They would be a great starter kit, but not worth shipping them.
