I just bought a 580ex for my 50D. I have never used an external flash and rarely use a flash at all. Any idea of a link or tutorial to get me started using this? Maybe some basic settings. Also, what is the main difference between the 580 and 430? Thanks for all your help.

For a rather thorough test of the flashes, read here (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-430EX-II-Speedlite-Flash-Review.aspx), for example.
Then reading this post (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=138907) can keep you busy for a while...

They usually include a nice book with the 580exII when you buy it, start there. I'm being a little flippant but the manual is pretty good.
The main difference is the power between the 580exII, and 430ex. Also the ability to use it as a master for wireless control of other compatible canon speedlights, the 430ex only operates as a slave in that system.
For basic settings try this. Camera on manual, shutter speed set to 1/125, aperture to f/8 flash set to ettl. Use the flash exposure control to do fine adjustments. then play with shutter speed and aperture for creative reasons. Flash will adjust output to meet your demands.
