Hello,
I have in the last 6 months started to take some candid photo jobs. Mostly indoor parties. I own a 300d and I just picked up the Rebel XT. I have been using the Canon - EF-S 17-85MM F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. I also have a speedlite 420 flash. Still on multiple differnet settings some shots come out not so sharp and dark. I am still learning so this may just be me and not the set up, but I was looking for any reccomondations on a good indoor low light lense.

Thanks,

Bob Simpson

I have a Canon 24-70 2.8L which is exceptional. The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is also supposed to be a very nice lens and is 1/3 the price of the Canon. If you don't mind zooming with your feet :) then also look at the 50mm f1.8. It's the best bargain of a lens you will find for your 300D (very inexpensive yet is supposed to be pretty sharp). The 50mm f1.4 is a nice lens, but is way more expensive than the f1.8.

Also, for the Rebel you will either need to get a flash that has flash exposure compensation as a feature (the 420 EX doesn't do this), or you need to get the hack that gives the 300D the flash exposure compensation feature. For my 20D I find that almost all of my pictures are underexposed and I need to add 2/3 stop to 1 1/3 stop FEC. I received a note from Canon support stating that the 20D underexposes a bit by design to help ensure that you don't blow the highlights.

Anything f/2.8 or lower is what you want, but since you didn't give a range its hard to say what you should go for.

For only 70ish dollars you can buy Canon's 50mm f/1.8. Pretty solid lens, and if you are willing to spend more they have a 1.4 which is very nice for low light situations.

And of course Canon's 16-35 f/2.8L, 28-70F/2.8L, 70-200f/2.8L IS is a winner if you want to break the piggy bank.
