Im trying to convert from jpg to becoming a RAW shooter, yesterday i shot 125 pics in Quality RAW and setting set to Raw Only. When i Downloaded the pictures to my mac, and went trough them, they were really small, and very unsharp, until i converted them i PS CS, after they were fine, why the small Thumbnails, do I need another viewer? Im just using the standard OS X picture viewer??

I don't know for sure since I never shoot only in raw but always when I shoot in raw I shoot in raw+jpeg. I guess it would be logical explanation that you can see only thumbnails which I guess (no real idea if it's true or not) camera generates for raw and not raw files by itself in system. PS supports raw and system (Mac or Windows I guess there's no difference in this) or system picture viewers don't know what to do with raw files and can't preview them.
But as I said... I never shoot in raw only and unfortunately I don't use Mac so I might be completely wrong about this.

You can never see the RAW files themself.

The camera always has to generate a JPG file so that you can see something on the display. It is just very small (only for identifying the picture) when you use the option 'JPG only'.

You must have been using RAW only........I set my 1D to shoot RAW + small JPEG. This way I get a reasonably sized Jpeg to look at when I go through the shots in Breezebrowser. If you shoot RAW only, you get a tiny representation of the shot.......

Ok sounds better , but schmoelzel , why do you set it to RAW + small JPEG doesnt that make the quility less good, or what, not sure i understand that RAW + small jpg or large jpg thing.

Please Explain

Thanx

The idea is that if you use RAW+Small JPG, you really work with the RAW file.

But the JPG file helps you for assessing the image, proofs etc...

If you use RAW+Large JPG, you can work with the JPG, but go to the RAW file if you really need it (demanding exposure situation, high contrast, large prints). Of course, this would be best, but eats up your CF card really fast.

Best regards,
Andy

ok, so it makes 2 files, one Raw and one jpg ( small or large)?? is that correct?

Yup you get 2 files. Raw and jpeg in whatever size you had it set.
Personally I always shoot with large jpeg (plus raw when it's needed if jpeg is not good enough afterall) since most of my work can be done with jpeg only. Not to mention there's usually no time for playing with raw when photos need to go out after race. :)

If you shoot RAW it also embeds a small JPG inside the RAW file, to use as a preview. If you shoot RAW+JPG it still does it, but as well as the small embedded JPG in the RAW, it records the JPG in your chosen size to the card.
