Nice snaps. Love that crying face!!
The blue is a lot, but I think it just makes a consistent backdrop. Either way, the second photo isn't clear, so nothing I'd bother with unless you love the expression or something.

it was the first time she let us put sunglasses on her, lol she is 1 and i wish that pic would have been crisp but with the AF of the D30 you dont always get what you want. thank you

The first one is crying out for a caption, like, "I was just mugged by a guy with a paint brush!"
In the second one, her right hand seemed to have conned the camera into focusing on it. The f/1.8 50mm is a good lens, but wide open it doesn't give you a lot of depth of field to work with. I'm not familiar with the D30. Does it have selective focus points? If so, pick one that lets you get the eyes in focus.

First is sweet..aw.. I would crop further to the right though to get what seems to be a finger out of the frame.
Second is OOF....

Great capture on the first one, although background is very distracting. Maybe try a tighter crop w/a bit more contrast?
The focus on 50/1.8 isn't great either, great piece of glass though.

I like the crop better, def. more focused. A bit over saturated for my liking though, and you gotta fix the bald spot on the kid's forehead too :) j/k
the mid-day sun really isn't a photog's friend :(

Yes, waaaaay too much contrast and saturation. Not a very flattering photo that I'm sure she would hit you for having taken it and keeping it years later.
