Whippeticious and I agreed to start the official sight hounds thread from my oiginal whippet snippets hread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=8375826#post8375826). So post your photos of whippets, greyhounds, salukis, borzois, afghans, lurchers, long dogs and other sight hounds here.

Here are three photos of our two past and one current sight hounds.

This is Suki, our wonderful whippet saluki cross, who sadly passed away in June 2008. You can see her Life in Pictures on www.sooksooks.com.

This is Faizal, a very big saluki greyhound cross, who we fostered back to health during the last four months of 2008.

This is Lola, our little whippet, who has been with us for about two months now.

I love Ozzy and the ball, both airborne.
I better start contributing.
This is Lily, I bred her but she's not mine anymore, although obviously we still see her, I also bred the other whippet who lives with her, Oscar.
Lily is a water baby, this taken with my crappy 75-300 non IS

there's already some fabulous photos here, thanks for starting the thread Marc. Love the borzois running, not a dog I see alot of around here and certainly not in action like that.
I wanted to post this one of a friends greyhound, Flynn. I took it about a year ago and it's not the best but it shows his joy at running. Sadly Flynn has just been diagnosed with osteosarcoma and probably wont be around for much longer. All his friends are devastated, as is his loving mum.

I've been told Salukis are like potato chips, you can't have just one. Sure enough! Before I knew it, this lovely rescue Saluki came to live with me. She's my wild child - but already has her JC in lure coursing and is soon to make her debut in agility competition. I really need to take some more recent pics of her...but here are two older ones.

Here's one of Lola our whippet and Sparky a retired greyhound having a fun run at the weekend.

Slightly grainy, but then again, it is a shot taken 200mm, ISO 1600, 1/800 and f2.8 on a very dull and overcast say under a tree canopy along the River Kelvin, so I'm quie pleased with the result.

Thank you! I'm still learning but it's my favorite subject to capture for sure.

I actually use a Nikon D300 with an 80-200 2.8 lens. This forum was recommended to me though as a great photography forum, so I hope that's okay. I will go edit my post above now with the exif data.

Last week I posted a link to Bayberrys whippet photos here in an email I sent out to our whippet club members to enthuse them about our upcoming fun day, which we held yesterday. Bayberry you got alot of compliments, everyone was raving about your photos.
Sadly Kerrance mine didn't work out too well, but I didn't get alot of opportunity, I was mostly busy operating the lure.
Here's a couple of my pathetic attempts. I think the lens will work, it's operator problems not equipment. sigh...........
I'd say I need a wider DOF and probably should forget about trying to get sequences of them running towards me and just concentrate on one point on the track and click like mad when they reach it, instead of trying to stick on them as they approach. It's all a learning curve for me.

Very nice! Whippet racing is incredibly challenging from a photographic standpoint. Once you can tackle whippet racing though, you can capture ANYTHING moving! LOL

I really like your low angle. My favorite shots to take are when I'm prone shooting with the lens just inches from the ground. I'm not familiar with the Canon line up, but I know it wasn't until my most recent upgrade that I could capture whippets coming straight at me. I started with a D80 and a 55-200 VR kit lens a little over a year ago. I could get some decent captures here and there, but it wasn't easy. I then bought an 80-200 2.8 lens, the first generation push-pull variety. My keeper rate went up quite noticeably. Then I upgraded to a D300 a few months ago and WOW what a difference! The AF system of the D300 is INCREDIBLE compared to the D80. Overnight I was getting amazing results. My last upgrade was a newer version of the same lens and I can now capture anything going or coming in any direction from any angle. I LOVE my current set up! The AF easily tracks and keeps up with the whippets.

Whippeticious, I can almost guarantee your issue is the body, not the lens. Your lens is PLENTY fast to keep up with whippets coming straight at you, but the camera - no way. The xxD series is going to be better, but still have a bit of trouble holding its focus on the dogs.

Dave Oh no, I musn't listen lalalalalalalalalalalala not listening. ;)this is what I suspected, I need a faster camera, I've been thinking about the 50D, the 7d and now I see the 1D mk 4 is out.

I do know I need to try again with a much wider DOF before I assume the 400D is no good. I might even see if I can get some friends and our whippets and just go to the track on a quiet week day and try for some more shots that way.

Not true...;) Try a whippet at full speed in the field and you'll have the speed as well the the unpredicatbility of where it goes... It's amazing how agile whippets are compared to greyhounds... Keeping the camera on them is the most challenging part!

What do you mean by it's not the lens... Is there any better zoom than the 70-200 2.8 L IS that I have not found out about? ;)

In my humble opinion, it's probably a combination of technique and body. If father Xmas could afford the 70-200 2.8 L IS last year, I'm sure he can get you a 7D this year :-)

I'm not sure if this question was directed at me? I meant the problems in those photos was not due to the lens - I think the 70-200 is quite capable of capturing a whippet running straight at you. Personally I don't use zooms for that, but I've done before and it works.

I think this is directed at me Tracknut. What I meant is the lens isn't at fault for my crummy photos, it's either operator problems, meaning ME or possibly that and maybe I need a better camera.
Oh and the only Father Christmas around here is me. I dont smoke or drink so I am saving like crazy for a better camera.

Kerrance!! that photo is brilliant!!!
I was silly, with my settings. I had it mostly on 2.8 with an ISO of 200 I think. I really should've had a wider depth of field, but as I said, I didn't get alot of chances to take pics, I was mostly stuck driving the lure.

I was silly, with my settings. I had it mostly on 2.8 with an ISO of 200 I think. I really should've had a wider depth of field, but as I said, I didn't get alot of chances to take pics, I was mostly stuck driving the lure.

Thanks Whippeticious. I know what you mean about not having a lot of chances to take pic's. When i go to the club to racing, i'm usually catching or traping dogs so I only get to photograph about two or three races. At the open meetings however, where i took my posted shot there are many more dogs and less jobs for me so i spend nearly all day whith my camera. I also have more time to tinker with different settings and see which works best.

I'm sure you'll crack it

Hi everyone. I am new to the site and a newbie to SLR. I have a Rebel XTi that I never took seriously and now am finding out how to use it! I was thrilled to see a sighthound thread! I am a lifelong sighthounder.

This is a pretty crummy pic but this is Sophie, our third of retired racers. She is the old girl in our home.

This is Simone, our second retired racer. We lost her to Cancer this past June. I doubt my heart will ever heal. This one really touched me.

Thank you, Marc. I have been wanting to say how beautiful Suki was then I saw your post here. It is true torture that we are condemned to fall in love, one right after the other, with these creatures. We raise them, train them, nurture them, and then have to suffer their passing. Then, we willingly do it again KNOWING the pain coming. Yikes. Anyway, thanks for the note!

Thanks! The little guy gets dragged to a LOT of greyhound meet & greets. This one was at Petco and they put us right next to the dog bed aisle. After about 20 minutes he decided he'd had enough and that those beds were way to hard to resist! He definitely is a little character.

best way to keep warm is run around like a loony. What's also evident is he probably needs a new coat, still, it means he can get stupidly muddy (which he loves) without having to worry too much about it. Tell you what though it's great shoving a hand or two under the coat if the cold gets to the fingers when taking photos, SOOOO warm in there!

Man, this is way too difficult!

While out playing in the back lane with Lola, I tried to get some action shots of Lola jumping for the ball. So I tried to throw the ball with my left hand and shoot with my right hand. Man, this is way too difficult. I kept throwing the ball against the wall or in the bushes.

I like this one as Lola is completely off the ground and the ball seems to stick against the wall.

This is our 6 year old whippet Wesley with our rescue lurcher Blue in the background. I was messing with an old EF 28-80mm kit lens from my 35mm days and the image quality was far superior to the one that came with the 350D I used for this. I also use 50D and 30D bodies but the 350D never fails to please. The shot was snatched with the camera held at knee level, pointed approximately and left to its own devices.

I came across this blokes work, http://www.giacomobrunelli.com/foto00014.html which I have to say I found disturbing but thought I'd have a play around. This is my version.

Greeting Antipodes! Blue is black, not blue (and he's not sad either!) It was the name he'd been given when we collected him from the foster home. A very intelligent whippet/greyhound/collie mix and a fantastic pet.

Lovely photos Sally, all of them.

Warning, Gross alert.
Penny found a bunny head at the park and after proudly parading around with it, ate it all, eyes, ears, teeth, brains, everything.

Nice one!

You could try and crop the images slightly so the overlap is less so the paws don't get cut off. May result in a failed stitch if you have to crop too much. Or you could place part of the original behind the layer and rub out the grass to bring back the paws in PS.

Here's two I did a short time back:

Glad my suggestion worked! Looks great now!

Not sure of the settings on the 7D, but you may want to reduce the continuous shooting speed slightly. That would give a little more space between the whippets. I shot mine with a 5DII so at a pretty slow speed compared to your 7D.

Thanks for the compliment, appreciated :-)

Thanks. :D I like the fast frames because it shows more of the galloping sequence. If I had it slower I would have had to stay on him longer and I wouldn't have got as much in.

^ how do you get that look like one fluid shot? is it just a bunch of pictures put together or is it some setting?

^ how do you get that look like one fluid shot? is it just a bunch of pictures put together or is it some setting?I had my camera on high speed continuous (8 frames per second), so I ended up with 6 individual pictures, and then in post processing I stitched them together. I used Canons own zoom browser program but I think you can do stuff like this in photoshop and various other programs if you have them. As you might have gathered I had to crop some of the pics a bit to get it right.

good job, gee, you sure notice that dog with the flouro muzzle dont you. It's a great effect though isn't it, stitching them. I've got a greyhound one I did a few years ago when I still had my 400D, I'll see if I can find it.

both great action shots. There's quite a bit of argy bargy happening in that race, did you get a sequence of shots to show any more of it?

Taking advantage of the furniture  Alena really isn't photogenic. She'll hide her face to avoid the camera most of the time.
