The castle was built by the O'Flahertys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Flaherty) in the 16th century, one of Connacht's most notable lord families. Aughnanure is one of over 200 tower houses in County Galway, constructed mainly by Gaelic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaels) and Anglo-Norman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_English_(Ireland)) land owning families. The tower lies close to the shores of Lough Corrib (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lough_Corrib), and translates to "the field of the yews" in Irish (Achadh na nlubhar).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aughnanure_Castle#cite_note-0)
The castle was controlled by the O'Flaherty chieftans until 1572 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1572), when it was captured by Sir Edward Fitton, president of Connaught, and granted to a junior member of the clan who had been enticed over to the Crown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crown). It was used to blockade Galway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Galway) during the Cromwellian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromwellian_conquest_of_Ireland) invasion. Soon after, it was granted to the Earl of Clanrickard, and then reclaimed by the O'Flahertys. It later fell into the hands of Lord St George as the foreclosure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreclosure) of a mortgage.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aughnanure_Castle#cite_note-1) It is now managed by Dúchas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BAchas), the Irish State body responsible for national monuments and historic properties.
