View Full Version : Does this happen to you?

I'm bothered. No, really.

I'll be driving down the street, going to the gas station. I look down the alley, and think "hrm...maybe in b&w." I'll be walking into my skyscraper office, look at the trees or the reflections of the clouds on the mirrored surface of the building, and think "darn, where's the camera!" I'll be at the mall, see an interesting face, and feel a desire to frame it with my fingers, determine lighting, and wonder about releases. I'll be going to my Dad's house, and think "if I could, how would I pose him? What lighting? What props, if any?"

This is getting rather bothersome. It's making it hard to think regularly, like red light actually means "stop," not a photo op for checkerboard red light/green light stuff.

I kid you not...everything is translated into "how? What lighting? What angle? What focal point? Composition??" And it's fast, too. Like, blam, into my head comes the thoughts.

Will it ever become managable? I don't want it to stop, exactly, but rather come at chosen times (like when I have a camera and some time)....

Sigh....

LOL! I have similar syndrome. When i am driving, i'm like "Oooo... Oooo... what bird is that?", "it must be a rare osprey, gotta stop the car now" "Oooo....look at that bird singing there, must be rare". :D

Simple.
Take your camera with you everywhere.
Take your time, when it is worth it. :D

Best regards,

It happens to me all the time. So much so that I asked my sister about it, who loves to draw. She says it happens to her all the time too.

That happens to me too. I started bringing my camera and tripod in the car with me everyday I head to work. The last straw was when the sun was rising over the Stanford hills backlighting one of their big antennas with brilliant reds. I wanted that picture so bad. Of course now that my camera is with me, I have not seen it that good :-( It did pay off a week ago, I spotted a Heron hunting in a field and captured it eating some poor critter.

No. It's more like I'll be walking down the street, waiting for the train or something and think "Gee, I need to post on that to POTN"

Actually, that's why I got the A80.

See, my biggest problem right now is that I don't own the eqipment...I've been borrowing it in spurts from a dear friend...which means more often than not I see something, and a serious craving in the middle of my mind gets triggered! And then the next few minutes are blown, just trying to get out of the studio in my head.

I was in my broker's office the other day, and staring out the window. I hadn't realized the conversation had stopped. All I knew was that the play of shadow and sun on the green, green hill would make a wonderful landscape. Until Ron started calling me back....and then I had to apologize and come back into my life. Thankfully, it wasn't a very important conversation, or I'd've been seriously embarrassed.

Drat these distractions!!!

I'm just hoping I'll get a handle on it, some slight bit of control over this. It is good to know that it happens with others, too. For a bit there, I was beginning to really wonder about me.

I don't think owning the equipment would help. Once you have the bug, well, you have it :D

This is a great thread...

So so true...I have just the same... What makes me smile about this even more is the fact that I so often mention my photographic view of the world to my wife like "Hey that sunset is great, if I could just frame that with so and so statue that would casta great shadow with some beautiful orange backlight...." that she now joins in... she mentions things all over the place that she thinks would frame a good picture...Ahh what is marriage about if you cant share things (like mental illness)

That happens to me from time to time as well.

What happens more often, now that I am into photograpy, is I am always analyzing pictures in magazines and other places. I am more interested in "how'd they do that" than the content. I do this with movies all the time now as well. It is getting really distracting. I can't just enjoy the movie, I have to study the scene from the camera's point of view. I look for the lighting tricks too.

I think it's a side effect of the hobby.

All the time.. I tried to alleviate it by getting an S400 so I'd have SOMETHING when these moments arose.. it didn't really help...

I was walking down the street in bright sunlight today, and I found thinking to myself that it'd be nice to have a lens hood and polarizing filter for my eyes. Most people would probably think hat and sunglasses, I expect. 'nuff said.

I get this real bad, after shooting an assignment, esspecially when I have been 'sniping' (an exercise of shooting cadid punter shots at a event with a telephoto lens, usually displayed in the evening on the stage screens between acts).

Everywhere I look I am framing shots, checking out angles and what shutter/aperture combintation would best suit the given composure.

Lol I think we all have the same disease! Everywhere I go Im pointing out things to my fiance....oh wouldnt that be a great shot blah blah blah. He is soooo sick of hearing it. He says STOP trying to take perfect photos all the time and just get normal snapshots like normal people do! lmao. I went into a camera shop to talk L's with the salesman and he was telling me he seen a fantastic sunset the other day and stopped on the side of the road, had no tripod with him, so set up on the car roof and got a great shot! Poor fiance... his jaw hit the ground! " OMG not you as well" he says... "your all obsessed" lmao

this all sounds so familiar :D

i look at movies or any program and say hey that girl or guy has a Canon!

walking down the streets thinking ooooh that would make a nice shot!
that's why like CDS i bought a small compact to always take with me but that didn't help very much!

i guess when it's in your blood you'll never get rid of it, just like L fever.

man i have a lot of diseases:lol:

holymoly, I'M NOT ALONE!! Thank you everyone, for giving me a breath of relief to know that I'm not going crazy. (Maybe we're ALL going crazy ?? )

My girlfriend often elbows me when we're at movies or watching TV when I point out what kind of camera someone is using or what lense they're using. I have a hard time watching a movie or a television show that has someone taking photos in it without breaking down the type of camera they're using, the focal length of the lense and whether or not they are really taking the pictures.... or ... or... even if the pictures they take could've been taken in the lighting they had available and the angle of the shot. Were they using film? Was it Digital? Was it a Canon or a Noink?

Maybe I'm the only one that has done this, but I saw 3 women (who were sisters) who had the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. I asked them if I could take their photo because their eyes intrigued me.. they agreed. I then realized I didn't have my camera with me!!!! Has anyone else done that before?

Just took pics of my brother on his sportbike. He thinks they are perfect.... hmmmm - I don't like the ISO, I don't like the shutter speed, I don't like the backdrop. I said we need to reshoot this thing....... the more you learn the worse it gets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Noni,
Yep, I do think in images more nowadays (but I always have anyway).

Btw, everytime I see your name I get startled and wonder if I'm the poster... My mom always called me Noni (but more sounding like "Nooonie")
