The 18-55 kit lens takes a 58mm filter. I would suggest a UV filter which is good for protection. However if you wish to use a polariser do take note that the front element rotates during focusing which is a nuisance. A close-up lens say +2 dioptres would be useful for simple macro shots.

Filter size is dependent upon the lens, not the camera.

Yep... Each lens has a specific filter size and it'll tell you on the lens itself. The 18-55mm kit lens has a 58mm thread and will only accept 58mm threaded filters. Other common sizes are 72mm and 77mm... not so much of the 67mm's... a few 52mm's...

One option is to buy the largest filter size you think you'll need, and buy step-down rings so it fits smaller lenses. There might be disadvantages to doing that, not sure.

I wouldn't bother with a filter for the kit lens, it's ok but you'll probably upgrade soon enough anyway. I use mine about once every 3 months, I use other lenses far more often.

Personally, I find it to be a hassle to keep moving one filter back and forth between two lenses. It's quite common for me to walk up to some scenery spot, shoot one shot with one lens, then switch to another lens of different focal length and shoot it again. If I had to keep moving the filter, it would be additionally distracting. So, I generally leave filters on lenses or stored with lenses.

I usually get Filter for protection from dirty fingers. Old habit from 35mm. for kit lens just get a UV filter, because its easier to clean the filter then the actual lens. The lens is indented so you have to reach in to clean it. filter usually have a slight ridge and the glass is usually very close to the thin band.

you'll find that if you become a fan of the filters, then you'll end up having to section off a part of your bag just for your filters....lol. almost every lens I have has a different filter size....UV, ploarizers.....they start to add up and take up space

Whilst I leave a UV on my Lenses all the time, I have a general question about Polarising filters. Do people generally leave them on there lenses all the time? When i was in NZ shooting landscapes etc i tended to leave them on all the tiem but here in the UK they generally stay in my bag most of the time (especially here in London)...

I give any student I have a hard time if I find a poliz filter on their lens (in class.) Poliz. lose a lot of light (3-4 f/stops is common, you cannot afford this usually.) And it is a variable amt of light depending on their orientaiton. If you don't need it, take it off. Most common use is to make skies bluer. Maybe NZ has some blue sky and U.K. doesn't much of the time?

Thought that might have been the case. There is a lot of blue sky in NZ and a lot of water, I think that is why it was on most of the time.

In London we dont seem to have the sky and water combination...
