After reading the advice from many here, I decided to purchase an Opteka EF-600 Digital Super E-TTL II flash based on value. (should be to me in a few days - fingers crossed, I’m very excited to start playing with it :) ) I am looking to use it on and off camera but mostly off camera and I would like to trigger it wirelessly.
Right now I have an XT. I do not have a 550EX or any other flash or triggering system.
My main use for this will be outdoors and I will find myself needing something other than an optical trigger method because I plan to play around with it at outdoor work events, automotive photography, sports events, friends weddings and a few other situations where other cameras and their flashes are bound to be present.
I absolutely love the way many of these photos come out when shot in mid day-early evening:

While I would love to purchase a 550EX it's not in my budget at this time. I also realize that I may not want to use two flashes all the time if I had one.
For those that are experienced, what other options would you recommend? Are there any affordable options that will allow me to capture photos shooting into direct sunlight at high speeds? If there isn’t what is the best option for me?
I appreciate your responses and I thank you for your advice.
