good afternoon, everyone!

i am really, really new at taking photography seriously. (it has only been 1 yr THOUGH I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN GREAT SHOTS). my pix come out incredibly professional, but i could never tell anyone how i got them.

additionally, about half of my pix have been shot in autofocus, and i almost feel like i am cheating.

what is a less-than-confusing way to understand fstops and aperture. i am considering a book called photO. for dummies, but much of what i have read doesn't incline me to GET fstops and aperture.

please help! N E 1!!!!

Any basic photo book should help you explain the basics of shutterspeed, aperture, etc.

General rule:
Low f-number = larger opening of the aperture (more light into the camera) and shorter depth of field.
High f-number = smaller opening of the aperture (less light into the camera) and longer depth of field

The smaller the apture is, the more light needs to come into the camera for a good exposure, so that effects the shutter speed. But you can also affect the shutter speed with increasing the ISO. So there's lots of settings you can play with to get the result you want.

You might find some of the references here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53846) useful. In particular, John Hedgecoe's books (while not strictly digital) are very good.
