Probably use a better lens for this, but I think it's good enough...what do you think??

Its not bad at all. Kit lens indeed does some good job. I have seen so many ppl making great pics with this lens.
Good shot Preston.

I hear a lot of complaining about the kit lens but I am not one of them. I have gotten some great shots with mine.
I like the rose, it is another example of the photographer being more important than the equipment.

Thanks for all comments. Glad that you guys like it. I also like my kit lens. Originally planned to purchase the 17-40mm L lens to replace it, but recently decided to delay that decision a bit and purchase the 50mm 1.4 instead.

Preston, I think the photo is just fine. The kit lens is often reviled for bad bokeh, softness, etc. Remember it is an economy class wide zoom.
It will never be as good a portrait lens as a 40 bladed prime with a see in the dark max aperture, nor will it have competitive bokeh.
It will never as sharp as an L lens.
It will not produce the macros of a dedicated macro prime.
When used within it's limitations, at tight apretures, in good light it will reward you with crisp, accurate photos that are not to be ashamed of.

Good shot! Was the rose indoors or outdoors? I've tried taking many a picture of roses, and only very few come out that crisp.
I don't make it too easy, though...the roses live outside, where there's great lighting in the evening due to the side of the house they're on. However, that's also the windy time of the day, and that side of the house is a wind tunnel.

Thanks. It's an indoor shot with external lighting and long exposure...glad that you like it.

Preston, I like it a lot. Is it handheld? I think I need to practice with my skill as I can't always hold the cam steady when it comes to long exposure!!!!!

Not handheld, with a tripod. BTW, how do you like your 17-40mm lens? I've been debating myself whether it's a good price/performance lens considered I already got the kit lens and 50mm 1.4 lens.

Preston, I really like my 17-40mm 4L. It's very sharp, even at wide open. The build is typical L quality, which is far superier than the kit lens. However, when it comes to value/$, surely the extra $500 cannot be easily justified (on the other hand, it's almost a steal at this price for an L lens). What it comes down to is really personal preference and satisfaction, I believe. To me, it's worth every penny. If you want high performance and good build, I would go for it. Just my 2 cents........

CW, thanks for your comments about the 17-40mm lens. I'll rethink about it. So far, I'm happy with the $/performance of the kit lens, love the sharpness of my 50mm 1.4 and will probably add a Canon 1.4x TC to get better reach for my 70-200mL lens...
