hey all,

so i just got a 1D MkII yesterday and still have to get a telephoto lens so that I'm all prepared for when the MotoGP circus arrives at Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia in October.

but a guy that Dad used to work with is into photography, and said that he had some mates that were refused entry to the GP because they were carrying big lenses. apparently any big white lens sets off all their alarms.

i had no idea at all about this, had never heard anything like that, so i have just checked the ticket sale/entry conditions on the official site.

the conditions of sale basically say that any photos etc. are only for private use, and that if anything is used publicly then they can basically ask you for the copyright and you basically have to hand it over to them.

fair enough i thought, no worries.

but in the conditions of entry they specifically say:

5. Patrons must not, without the prior written consent of AGPC, bring any of the following items into the Event:
(p) any photographic, video or audio recording equipment AGPC deems unacceptable for the purposes of Condition 14 below, which may include (without limitation) audio recorders, camera tripods, monopods or lenses with a total focal strength of greater than 300mm and digital video equipment.14. Without limiting any action available to AGPC pursuant to the Act or any amendment thereof, it is a condition of entry to the Event that:
(a) a person cannot make or reproduce or use any film or other form of photograph, moving picture, still pictures or any sound recording or any of them (Footage) of the Event or any part of it for profit, gain, public advertisement, display or for any other purpose except for the private enjoyment of the person making the Footage, without the prior written consent of AGPC, Dorna and/or FIM;
(b) if a person makes or reproduces or uses such Footage of the Event or any part of it with or without the consent of AGPC, that person must on request by AGPC assign, in writing, all copyright and all intellectual property in the Footage to either AGPC, Dorna and/or FIM or their assignees as directed by AGPC; and
(c) any filming from the Pit Roof VIP Village is strictly prohibited.well, bollocks.

so that effectively kills any idea of taking a 100-400mm lens. so now i am thinking the 70-200mm might have to do, with either the 1.4 or 2x extender.

but i am not sure how strict they are on it? has anyone else had big issues? maybe i am better off buying a Sigma or Tamron lens so they don't see a great big white lens sitting in my bag? or make it a "rat lens" with some black spray paint when i get it? :-P

last year i took in a video camera and tripod on the Friday, went through the gate no worries but we did get through with a big group and it seemed that the staff on the gate were fairly chilled. but Dad once we were in apparently some official looking person did tell Dad that we couldn't use the video camera or it would be confiscated. so the video camera sat in the bag beside the tripod all day and we didn't even take it on the w'end.

what a bugger. was looking forward to getting some good pics at PI. i guess the 70-200mm lens will have to do. :x
but i was planning on taking a monopod, that gear would get heavy after a while. not sure that i want to risk getting kicked out or having anything confiscated. :?
i guess i can just go in and find a big stick to rest the camera on. either that or there is usually a fencepost handy.

but i know that plenty of people have said that 300mm is plenty. maybe they are right. maybe i'm getting all worked up over nothing. we'll see.

so i just wanted to see if anyone here regularly attends such events? how do you go with getting your gear in, are the gate staff usually fairly reasonable about it or do they go over your gear with a fine tooth comb making sure that you can't get anything past them? i guess alot would depend on the individual person at the gate as well...

(and just out of interest, i am supposing that the only way to get in with a big lens is if you happen to be in possession of a press pass? and how would one acquire such a thing?)

I've carried large lenses to all the GP's I've been to, never been asked to leave or not use one.
I'll be taking my new 50-500 this year ........

If you can be bothered carrying both, take the 70-200 on the camera and then swap to the 100-400 when you're in amongst the crowd. No one but photography enthusiasts will ever know! But you can definitely get away with it, I wouldn't think a monopod though. If you're on a grass area, just take a towel or something to sit the gear down on when you're definitely not taking photos, maybe shoot for a couple of laps but then watch the next couple, things like that so you don't get too tired and everything.

Edit: I want to go too but I've got my year 12 exams at the end of October/start of November so I really shouldn't

Fut!
I want to see you get that lens in, if you manage that you'll be my hero!

go on Moose, how could you not go, especially being in Melbourne already! get some early study done, then time for a 3 day break at the GP.

well i'm going to write a nice email to the Media/PR person at the GP and see if a keen hobbyist can be excused from the usual rules...
