Hey All,

I have not yet done any GN photography and wondered if the equipment I have would be suitable, from what I have read on here I think the nifty fifty would prob be the best choice.

- Canon 400D
- Kit Lens 18-55mm
- Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC
- Nifty Fifty mkII 50mm F1.8

As for lighting I only have the flash built into the camera, should I be looking into another flash or some extra lighting units?

Eek,

You Should be ok with out any flashes or lighting, it will be very hard but it can be done!

more the question, are you shooting on location (out in the big wide world) or in a *studio* as it were?

Out side on a bright day would be best choice IMO and even pop down to your local hardware store to get some foam borads of something for reflectors to try and bounce that light back onto your model

I have never had any luck at all with pop up flash so im not 100% sure on your ideds with it

another idea would be to get a few big bright directed lights from the shop also and see what you can do with them???

somone with much more exp will be along soon

Location is undecided, actually everything is undecided was really just trying to get a feel for what equipment from my bag would be best suited and how to get the best results from it.

I would really like to do some soft warm looking indoor shots as well as some bright sharp outdoor, I like the idea of the boards to reflect the light.

Would something like this work?

Silver is very reflective. A simple white project board would work. Check at your local art supply store for one. About 24x36 or so; white foam board.

Would a starter lighting/backdrop kit like this be a good idea?

You could shoot at the "Golden Hour" and get really natural warm light. But the silver reflector will give you more contrast. Try using one of these: reflector (http://www.adorama.com/FPPR42GW.html) That will also give you nice warm tones. But before all of this, I would go get a decent light meter!!

this would work. You just need an assistant or stand of some kind with clamps to get the correct bounce.

And avoid continuous lights; they are too hot (actual physical heat hot) and won't give you decent shutter speeds without significant ISO adjustment.

I like the oval size reflector better for outdoor work. More reflector to use for a taller person.
