I have just purchased a brand new Canon EOS 20D which has Firmware 1.1.0 on it.
I have seen that there are updates. This my first ever digital camera, and to be honest I'm totally scared and nervous about downloading updated firmware, because I don't think I will know what I am doing!
Only had my camera for one day, and the first time I used it I got the Errorr 99 message which totally freaked me out. :(
Much help required by a complete and utter novice.
Thank you.

My 20D with firmware 1.1.0 has never given me any Err-99. Did you check that the lens was properly attached?

After you check the lens;turn camera off and take battery out for 1 minute,
Reinstall battery/ Hope this helps!!!
If not......take the camera back for a replacement.

Hmm this has me wondering if there are good 20D's and bad ones. My 1.0.5 firmwared 20D has never Err99'd, and I am not at just shy of 10000 shots.

I've had one ERR99, i'm not sure what firmware i'm on - 1.1 I think, or whatever the one previous to the latest update is.

I have had my 20D for about 5 months and have only had one err99. I have version 1.1.0. When it happened, I was like, "Oh, that must be what happens". I just took the battery out and remounted the lens and all was fine. Haven't had a problem since.

I have my 20D with 1.1.0 which havent gived me err99 yet (touchwood!). Make sure your lens mount & contacts are clean & try again. You can get a replacement &/or get the canon service do the firmware upgrade for you (free), not sure if 2.0.0 will fix err99 though.
I would be very dejected if I get a error on my first day of pruchase ;(

Don't think so either as the update is only for support for the wireless transmitter.

You know the Error 99 message appeared again this morning. It only seems to appear when the on off switch is on *ON* not when it is the next click up when images can be viewed.
Phoning the store today!

It only seems to appear when the on off switch is on *ON* not when it is the next click up when images can be viewed. So, is this happening only when you try to review images? If so, does it happen just as soon as you hit the review button, or does it wait for you to try to move to the next/previous picture?
What lens is on the camera?
