Hello,
Can a raw format file be created when I select any of the 'auto' modes?
It seems that when an auto mode is selected only a jpg format is created.
Thanks,
W

If you mean the 'Green Box' mode then no. You can select P (Program) and change this. P won't give you full auto though, only exposure descisions.
Most people around here stear away from P mode, and almost none use full Auto, the preference seems to be AP which you set the aperture (my preference), the really hard nuts only run on full manual!

That is correct. I can't remember if the hacks will let you create a RAW in basic mode. If you're still using the basic zone you're probably not ready for RAW anyway, it can take a lot of knowledge to get a RAW image looking good, JPG is pretty good out of the camera.
I think Pete means Av on the dial, which stands for Aperture Priority. I use that 90% of the time, and M when i'm using an external flash.

Opps yep, Av for Aperture Value, not AP for Aperture Priority!

What you can do is learn the feel of your camera in P mode (which will give you just jpeg) and then when you really start working the camera, on the other side of the dial. Then you can go RAW and have more control over your images.

What you can do is learn the feel of your camera in P mode (which will give you just jpeg) You can shoot RAW in P mode. It is Full Auto (Green Box) on which you can only shoot JPEG. P mode autosets the exposure, but still allows you to adjust it.

I don't trust Green Box, too many descisions made for you, I think it does exposure, white balance, ISO and focus mode, too much room for the camera to get it wrong, cameras are smart, but not that smart.
It takes skill and experience to get good results in all conditions (After 15+ years of using an SLR, I still can't make the claim to get good results in all conditions!) Just see how green box goes in odd lighting, like backlit, mostly white subject mater (usually snow), or something unusually dark.
Perhaps one day they will have a camera with AI that will get it right, but that would take the fun out of it!

I might be wrong but Aperture Priority the camera sets the Aperture. Ooh not sure...

Apart from the phrasing that's correct - in aperture priority mode (Av on the dial) you select your aperture and the camera sets the exposure time.

Actually there was a discussion a while back about this, and you will be suprised that there are a lot of well respected members that use the "P" mode. It produces good results when you are not looking for a certain effect or setting that requires you to use one of the other creative modes (Av, Tv, etc...) So don't be steared away from that mode, just play around with the different settings and see what works best for you and have fun.

Here is a poll from a while back on the subject:http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56590&highlight=green (http://). People do youe P it is just that the majority don't as the mode of preference.
I often use P with program shift to get what I want, but mainly use Av. The main issue with Programe is that is seems to use the 1/focal length 'rule' for minimum shutter (my personal experience), so in lower light conditions you can get caught out. The 1/focal length rule does not apply to APS-C framed DSLR's, it should be 1.6/focal legth, or reality, as that is often not enough to get sharp results.
