I am downgrading. It's a long story, not a financial one.
basically I have a 40d, it gives me migraines to use the viewfinder and I need to use the lcd screen to shoot and be able to auto focus. I am NOT manually focusing. Anyway I am torn between the top 2, or maybe a G9. (you can use the lcd w/ that one right?)
so wwyd?

If you want to start comparing on your own:

And if you google Canon SX10IS vs S5IS you will get a bunch of hits.
I'm sure people will chime in with a ton of useful info.
I love my S5 IS and you can get them used for very good prices now. Check out CHDK also, adds a bunch of awesome features to it such as Raw, timelapse, motion detection, long exposures etc.

have u thought of getting a DSLR with LCD liveview shooting, so u need not look through the viewfinder. example 500D?
i'm using the SX10 and i can really feel the limitations of a pns vs a DSLR so i can't imagine how u'd be able to "cope" after downgrading. if money is not an issue i suggest u still w DSLR cameras with liveview

There are SLR's that have good, quick liveview mode on the LCD.
I would check out:
Sony A300/350/380
Panasonic G1/GH1
Olympus EP-1
I think you would have a hard time with the image quality differences going back to a S5 or SX10 from your 40D.

thank you tkbslc
I actually looked at some of the images from the 2 I was researching (the 3 actually) and the quality is just not up to par.the ca was too bad for me. I'm totally keeping the 40d and am now just trying different things to help aleviate the eye pain. If these things don't work, I'm goingt o look at the ones on the list. thanks :) I really want a nikon d700 (sorry potn) so I don't wanna go the route of the 3 mentioned just yet.
