any suggestions for a good general purpose lens. Can not afford the very best at this time so need a starter to fit a rebel xt my son bought for me. All thoughts on the matter are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Have a look here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752), then come back and ask questions :)

If you are looking for an inexpensive lens for landscapes, shooting at F8 or smaller, then the 18-55 kit lens would be hard to beat, for a wide angle, or the 24-85, or for a bit more money th 17-40L

Cactusclay is right on regarding the kit lens.

Wide angle is a good lens for that sort of thing, unless you don't want a wide angle then a longer focal length would be ideal.

Sounds like I need to give the old kit lens a good workout and then see... Thanks a bunch for helping a newbie. I will watch and learn from you all.

Ditto. Give the XT kit lens another try. I know my 300D kit lens does not disappoint at f8 or f11. ;)
