First of all I still consider myself a novice in the photography world. I have spent the last year learning my 40D and I am ready to purchase my first flash. I am considering either the 430 EXII or the 580 EXII. My question is as a novice am I going to benefit form the more expensive 580 EXII over the 430EXII. I am into all types of photos ranging from wildlife, Aviation, and your everyday walk around. I am now taking on the task of learning portraits.

I Know this question has probably burned up this site in the past but your experiences and recommendations are taken seriously.

Thanks Timbo76

The 580exII surpasses the 430EXII in two major ways. Its one stop more powerful, and it will serve as a master to control other compatible canon flashes wirelessly. I bought the 430 when I was in your position, but moved up to a 580exII shortly thereafter. The 430 is a nice flash, you will be happy with it, but will probably nag yourself about whether you should have stepped up the top of the line, might as well just start there. Of course its easy for me to spend your money :)

I'll just say "what he said".....

If you have the funds, get the best that you can get. You won't be a novice forever.
