Found a nice spec of dust a little larger than the dots in this colon -> :
Something that size shouldn't be acceptable right?

If you send it back, do you pay for shipping?
I don't know man, it may not show up... but it can at f/22 or something

Send it back plain and simple if it's going to affect performance.

Yeah I would pay for shipping. I'm looking at some pics I took earlier. I can't see any blurry spots where the dust is though. It just really bothers me. I can't believe it passed QA. The dust isn't on the side or near an edge or anything. This should've been clearly seen by any human.

You'd be surprised how big the spec has to be on the lens for it to show up. If you don't believe me, take something larger and put it on the lens and take pictures at various f/stops. I doubt you'd be able to see it, even if is 2-3 mm wide. But if this is a new lens and you don't mind paying shipping, by all means return it.

Its a 70 buck lens. How much QA do you think goes into it? Very highly doubt this will effect perfromance at ANY f/stop

Man, is this the day for dusty lenses or what? A spec of dust won't be visible in photos, for a $70 lens if you're happy with it otherwise go with it.

Unless the speck affects the image ( you have taken some test shots, haven't you?), I really wouldn't worry about it. Besides, if the dirt comes from New York, you now own some Manhattan real estate, and it's probably worth more than the lens.

Send it back if you want to but be aware that something that size can't possibly effect normal photo's at all.
Why? because it's way outside the focus planes of the lens.Hold a thin stem of grass in front of the lens and you'll see how big an object has to get before you can even see it.
There's another aspect to this as well-this model lens has internal spaces between the front and rear main element groups,it's not sealed at all so it WILL get more dust soon.
One time i used mine at a motocross race, swapping lenses all day.The sensor gained a couple of specs of dust ,the 50/1.8 got at least 50 fine specs:(
They aren't worth cleaning either because the plastic tabs that calibrate and hold the front and rear groups together are glued

This answers my question.

im confused.. i was under the impression that the 50mm 1.8 was a solid piece of glass... No inside or outside.. just front and back
Just blow it off or clean the lens.. you will pay more in headache and loss time than the lens is worth

don't worry about it, it's not going to affect damge, how ever you'll do more damage worrying about it. There's DUST EVERY WHERE!! water, plastice, computers, your thoat, hair, etc etc etc.... don't worry about, now, it full of dust, then worry. My 16 buddys say the same thing

Another thing to think about is the fact that, although B&H are a great place to buy stuff, they are the slowest I have ever dealt with when you return.

My luck If I send it back, MORE dust will be on the lens....Then, as soon as you know it, SHIPPING ALONE will be total of$70.00 because of 1 little piece of dust, from New YorkIt already has sentemental value.....put that $70.00 into a 70-200MM 2.8 :)

If everything else is OK (e.g. focuses accurately) I wouldn’t return it. There is no guarantee that a new copy will not have dust and it can be worst in other aspects.

my 85f1.8 has a speck it is anoying knowing its there but i wont send the lens back in case canon mess it up getting the speck out, the lens is very sharp and i just wont risk having it pulled to bits.

Just received a brand new (Nov 05 built) 70-200mm f2.8 IS to replace the oh-too-soft one I sent back. Yeah, the $1700 big white Canon flagship which has weather seals. And guess what ... there's a very visible speck of white dust near the middle of the INSIDE of the front lens element. So much for Canon QC - they just want to get them out the door and sold as fast as possible. I'm sure that the dust spec will have no visible effect but it clearly demonstrates to me (for the second time) the lack of quality control by the manufacturer.
