My main concern when buying a 20D or an XT - provided a reasonable set of build quality and functions - is image quality vs price.
I have read most of the reviews on internet about the XT and the 20 D, and I cloncluded that both cameras deliver the SAME QUALITY PICTURES.
IS THIS RIGHT? :o
I have been an amateur photographer since...30 years now. I owned an OM-1, a T-90 and the last years I shifted to digital with a Nikon 995. I have been shooting mainly during hollidays trips and intend to re-start, once again, seriously(?), with my photographic hobby. When not shooting while traveling, I shoot mainly nature and architecture.
WHAT I DO NOT NEED:
I do not need high fps shooting: I NEVER shoot sports and up to now I have NEVER used in any camera this function (!)
I do not need more than 800 ISO : I have been able to do my pictures up to now without it
I do not need aditional weight: I suffer a bit of backpain ( it seems to me that with one or two additional lenses and a tripod the weight difference will disappear...)
WHAT I NEED:
A good screen
Good optics
Good S/N ratio
Good colour and sharpness
On paper it seems that an XT would be OK for me and the savings could go to a good additional equipment.
Has any one used on daliy basis both ? Will I miss the 20D after buuying the XT ?
Please Help his newcomer to this forum !

I have read that the XT is a very capable camera but the noise level is too high at higer ISOs. I have a 20D and love it...Dean

The reviews i've read show that the pictures will come out pretty much the same. If you want small and light the rebel should do the job.

The reviews I have read say the same about the pictures being the same, the 20D just comes with more features. Do a search on the site and you will find this has been discussed before.

Both deliver the same resolution of image. One has a little more extensive list of advanced features. One has a more consumer-oriented user interface. Both use the same lenses.
It would be accurate to say that they are roughly similar in most aspects of performance. But there are many small differences also.

Actually I think you could get by with the Digital Rebel based on your requirements. Did you give that any thought? There's still some new ones out there and plenty of used ones at very reasonable prices.

I would not "get by" with the Drebel at this point. There are enough technological advances to make the XT or 20 D the proper choice. As a fellow amateur photog I would suggest the XT would serve you very well. One of your preferences is based on not needing additional weight. While you give up some in body structure going with the XT you will find the XT significantly lighter than the 20D. May I suggest going to a retailer and holding both. You will see the difference immediately. If weight is a concern this will be a no brainer, especially since they are technologically similar with some differences of course (depending on who you ask they will be minor or major differences). However, for the "amateur" as you and I are you will find plenty of options to play with on the XT. What good is a camera if you find it difficult to carry around. Good luck, go out and give the cameras a little hands on at the store to see which you like.

I had the same dilemma a few weeks ago. My suggestion is, go to a local camera shop and test drive the 20D and XT, just hold them and snap a couple pictures. It only took me five minutes to decide on the 20D.
Also do a comparison search and check other opinions, but your feel for the camera should be the number one prioity.
In a few weeks you will forget about the extra dollars for the 20D.
Good luck!!!

As with the above post. I had exactly the same delimma and same result. I knew the 20D had more features, but when I went to the store (Wolf Camera) and held them, it was the 20D all the way. The XT was too compact/cramped, though I'd much prefer hauling it around than the bigger 20d, but I'm extremely happy with the 20D (other than price :) I spent a fortune for being an amateur).
Let us know where you land.

Coming from a 300d (Drebel), I tested the 350d (XT) and 20d side by side. I much preferred the 350d size, feel, and sound (!), and I would say that the money saved is very significant and won't be forgotten in a few weeks. Spend it on some good glass, a flashgun, or better still a trip to use your new camera!
The image quality is very high indeed, especially converting from RAW. Compared to the 300d there is a significant improvement. Also the speed and handling are far better than the 300d.
