Got a new lens today and fired a few test shots. I can't seem to get the depth of field right. The plant in the front isn't crisp nor is the plant in the very back. These are the settings: f/4, 1/2500 sec, ISO-400, 25mm. All C&C is welcome; fire away! Thanks!

Getting a depth of field that has the depth you want at the distance you want is a little beyond the unaided system and requires a good understanding of depth of field math and hyperfocal distance.

My general suggestion would be to study everything at www.dofmaster.com and come back with your detailed questions. Meanwhile, just stopping down more and trying to focus at a point that is about one third of the way from the near point towards the far point of your range of focus.

Also, remember that sharpness is a relative concept and in the math you will find some arbitrary values, such as the size of the circle of confusion.
