This is in regard to film (sorry). Would there be a signifiant different in image quality for a camera with ETTL-2 vs. ETTL-1 using say an EX550? I want to buy a film SLR. I'd like an EOS-3 but note that is hasn't been updated to ETTL-2 yet where the Elan-7ne has been updated to ETTL-2.
Any opinions?

Not in general. In the more unusual situations you'll see a difference but it's not going to make an overwhelming difference in general. I wouldn't decide which camera to get solely on E-TTL vs. E-TTL 2.

The main difference between ETTL1 and 2 is the switch from active focus point biasing of flash exposure in ETTL 1 vs. subject based using all flash metering segments in ETTL2. In ETTL2, the camera determines where the subject is by measuring the reflected preflash rather then using the active focus point. In ETTL1, if you apply the same principles to flash exposure as you do to ambient light exposure. you will be fine without ETTL2. Increase FEC for subjects brighter the 18% Grey and decrease FEC for subjects darker then 18% grey.
You can mimic the Averaging Mode of ETTL2, by switching to Manual Focus with ETTL1. You can do that using the switch on the lens, or using Cfn 4-1, and releasing the * button before you depress the shutter button. That forces the camera to average all the metering zones.

It's very familiar to me. I have no idea why it's familiar to you.

I think you two went to different schools together.
