I have a dell laptop but want to edit from a stand alone monitor. Can someone please recommend one for me. There are so many choices and my brain hurt. I only have about $200.

Bobster, that actually doesn't matter unless you get a cinema display or some other weird monitor like that. Most have both DVI and D-Sub, and many new ones include HDMI too.

I personally used a 2408WFP with my m1210 laptop, good contrast range, good brightness range, covers more than NTSC and either 96 or 102% of aRGB (forgot which), and it's an 8bit VA so good for color reproduction. Also has VGA (d-sub), two DVI, HDMI, Display Port, composite, and component imputs, along with a card reader, usb hub, and the ability to use picture in picture and a few other features if you like to get fancy.

ok so you missed the point of where she only has $200 to spend, so quoting her with a $400 display isn't any help :)

most cheap displays mostly have eith Analogue or a DVI connection in my experience..

Did miss the $200

But almost all new monitors from major brands have both. All dells do.

Get something like this:
Dell Refurbished E2209W 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor Product Details (javascript:makeWin2('http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/popupproductdetail.aspx?sku=E2209W9&?~lt=popup&c=us&l=en&s=dfh&cs=22',%20'500',%20'400');)
(Part # U853F)75$149.00Under 200, not many monitors that are worth anything. at 250, you ca get a few good monitors, and at 400, you can get some very good ones. I'm sure you can bump your budget to 250 at least though, and simply look for monitors with at least 700:1 contrast, 250-400 cd brightness, and the all important 178 degree viewing angles. The viewing angle of 160 may be all you can find at that price though, and in that case look for the highest gamut coverage (usually 85-95% sRGB)
