Ok, when I orderd the lens I also bought the Canon UV Haze filter to protect the front element. When I removed the filter so I could install it, I saw that the spring clip thing, which holds the glass in the filter frame, had halfway sprung out. It was easy enough to reseat it, but I am worried that it could pop back out after it is installed on the lens and scratch its surface. Am I being overly paranoid? after the filter is seated in the lens, will the spring clip be captivated in its housing? Return it to B&H? Thanks for the help!!

Return it. B&H is great about RMA#s. It's a normal manufacturing assembly QA issue. If you don't send it back, how will they know their assembly needs tweeking. Help them by returning it. J.

I suppose you could return it.. But I buy the Canon filters often.. and I'd say about 30% of those I have received from B&H have exhibited the exact same "sprung spring"
I am convinced it happens during shipping and storage.. (the effects of temperature change on spring steel etc...)
I've seen it in other brands as well but I buy the Canon brands .. practically in bulk. (the whole "L" weather sealing thing and all ;) )
I always just pop the spring back in and go to work.
I have never had the spring pop out again under any circumstances.

Thanks!!! I had wondered about something like that. If you have had no problems after reseating the clip, then I may as well try it out. I already have shaken the filter around, squeezed it trying to make it pop out again, fortunately it has not. Thanks for the advice, now I will feel safer while I put it through its paces tomorrow.

I've had 2 hoyas do the same thing. Once reseated, I never have had another problem.
