View Full Version : Selecting a camera

I want a digital camera (not necessarily a Canon) with certain features:
1. Uses SD memory card
2. Uses AA batteries
3. 10 megapixel or higher

Is there a way to filter all cameras with these characteristics so I can examine their specs more closely. I don't want to look at each and every model to see if they fit the above requirements. Several years ago I found a web site that allowed the user to specify quite a few camera characteristics, but now about the only characteristics that I seen that are selectable are megapixels and Brand.

are you wanting a point and shoot or are you wanting to go with a DSLR?

what type of budget do you have to spend?

what will you be shooting most with the camera?

dpreview.com allows you to do quite a lot of filtering.

I believe some cameras (Canon DSLR's included) also have grips that allow you to add AA batteries into the camera.

SNAFU,
The questions you ask are selectable characteristics. I should be able to answer those questions and filter out models I don't want. Is there a web site that allows me to do that?
But to answer your questions---

arla,
dpreview.com is a nice site with lots of selectable features. However, battery type was not selectable and neither was price. I tried to keep my preference list short but only cameras over my budget ($300) came up. Here is my list:
Format: Compact
Effective pixels: 10 million to 12 million
Digital zoom: Yes
Min shutter: 15 sec or more
Built-in Flash: Yes
Storage types: SD
Uncompressed format: RAW
LCD: 2.5 " or more

Nine cameras with these features came up. All expensive. Aren't there more out there that use SD memory, AA batteries, have manual exposure control, and cost less than $300?

Last I checked, only newer cameras were over 10 megapixels. Also cameras that shoot RAW are not lower end cameras either. That means only newer higher end cameras fit your criteria.

BTW, I wouldn't be concerned with digital zoom if you are shooting RAW. You'll have to process the pictures anyway, you might as well crop them at the same time.

Lastly, this section of the forum is for SLR cameras, not point & shoots.

Thanks for reporting this. :( The little white triangle thing is the button to push to tell one of us Mods to move a thread or to report something we need to see. So, I moved this thread out of DSLR's and put it where it belongs.

To answer the OP, there will be limitations for astronomy as most P&S don't have that level of control, manual focus for getting the moon, for instance. But I bought my son a Canon SD850 and it's a great little thing. It just doesn't do miracles like my 5DII. ;)
